Hey guys,
I'm not a big fan of the NFL but I am a huge follower of Michigan football, so obviously your picks today have gotten my attention. I've watched Henne closely for the last four years obviously and am extremely interested to see how he does in the league, and maybe I can help shed some light one what you guys are getting. I can tell you there's always been somewhat of a controversy even among Michigan fans as to Henne's value, but I think he has a chance to establish himself as a reliable starter.
The guy's got some of the most amazing physical talents I've seen out of a Michigan QB (I've been watching since the mid 90's starting around the Grbac/Collins/Griese timeframe). At his best the guy is better than Tom Brady ever displayed at Michigan, albeit Brady made a drastic improvement once he moved on (this in terms of pure talent - Brady had a calm about him that everyone can obviously see now). With a clean pocket he can make all the throws necessary, and throws the deap seam particularly well in my opinion. The problem obviously is when the pocket breaks down - the scouts are right when they say he has really poor improvisational skills. He has a tendency to roll out backwards and right whenever the pocket collapses and in my memory nearly every single play that developed this way turned out dead for us. He didn't make nearly the improvement in this aspect of the game as I had hoped he would from his sophomore year on. This is my biggest question mark for him as a legitimate NFL quarterback where time to throw is even less than the college game.
I've attached a few highlights below from games in which I thought he threw the ball best in his career so you guys can see for yourselves. People harp on the # of big games we lost under him, but he actually played pretty well in most of those games (OSU '06, USC in the '07 Rose Bowl), but our defense usually didn't do him any favors. In evaluating Henne's numbers I think it's important to remember that he was a 4 year starter and that his completion percentage is really hindered by just a horrific sophomore year (he struggled and the team was decimated by injuires), and that he was hurt for half of this last season, his senior year.
