This game could've been ours if we'd play the way we did in the 4th for the whole game. It's definitely hard to stomach Mare not hitting a field goal that 4-5 years ago would've been as automatic as Vinatieri kicking a game winner in the playoffs. Would've been nice to have a come from behind victory to somewhat ease the pain of the Monday Night Disaster. What's sad is 17 points is still the most points in a game scored this season.
QB- Harrington looked lost in the first 3 quarters but got in rhythm with the no huddle offense. It's the same trend, early picks but better performance down the line. It would've been interesting to see how he would've done if Linehan was still our O-coord. With the state of our OL, he's the best fit, gets the ball out quickly. If he can keep the momentum of the 4th quarter for the rest of the season, he should remain the starter.
RB- Ronnie did much better but he's still stuttering at the line. Morris's fumbling was inexcusable for a veteran like him and he better shake off the rust soon or find himself behind Minor. Brown needs to improve his vision (i.e. find the holes faster) and stop being tentative. Right now, he's no Ricky Williams, who can make things out of nothing. Brown also hasn't been as involved in the passing game which is supposed to be one of his strong aspects.
WR/TE- Still shaky and dropping passes but improving a bit. Finally, Chambers has been getting some looks his way and likewise for McMichael. Welker continues his solid play even with more attention paid to him. He just gets open. Hagan's young and hopefully can correct the same issues that plagued him in college (dropping passes). But McMike and Chambers have no excuse. It's nice to see Chambers and Welker buddying up and preventing the D from fully keying on just one of them.
OL- Definitely improved and I knew way back that the switching of D-Mac and Shelton's spots would be a good boon for the OL. Shelton's just not mobile enough for the LT spot and D-Mac was decent enough there. But good to see gradual improvement overall. 0 sacks for the 1st time this season earns them the game ball. If they can do that with Culpepper, all of them deserve to go to the Pro Bowl.
DL- Got pressure but just not enough. Jets were sacked 6 times by Jacksonville and I expected at least 2/3 of that. Solid effort but not as good as expected. Run D was inconsistent. Stuffed runs in some plays but also gave up some.
LB- Letting Baker get any passes is bad enough but they also gave up some drive extending runs for 1st downs. Like the DL, solid but not spectacular. Crowder and Zach seemed to be everywhere which is a good because the other 1-2 LB's were almost invisible.
DB/S - Just horrible. They're the real reason we lost today. Why in the world we even have Eddie Jackson is astounding. Had Daniels been at full strength, this would've turned out different. But a veteran AND a rookie CB+safety, is a must in the offseason. Safeties Tillman and Hill all blew it big time in coverage. Allowing Coles to get 2 deep balls is unacceptable. Whenever they chuck it up, you wish the WR can drop the ball or be overthrown because the CB's and S's sure aren't going to break it up or be anywhere near the play. Makes me wish we had Schulters and Bell in there instead. If Jason Allen can't crack this bunch, something's wrong. This crew was supposed to be ok at best and it's not even close to being ok. There's no shutdown corner nor ballhawk/heavy hitting safety among em.
ST- Gave up good field position and Mare missed a chance to tie the game up. You can't blame him too much on that 50 yarder but if this were 4-5 years ago, that would've been almost automatic.
Coaching- Saban looks a little too complacent right now. I was expecting him to blow like a volcano by now especially towards our Swiss cheese secondary. He's a different person from the hopping mad coach who lit a fire under players Mularkey as usual is a horrible play-caller and it's no coincidence that we moved the ball much better in the no-huddle. Whatever magic he had with the Steelers is gone.
