Isn't the ultimate rule of thumb not to draft special teams in the first round....now ted ginn is great in my opinion but his main role is a return man....anyways the draft that really ticked me off was Donnie Jones he was a MONSTER punter and he really kept us in many games so we trade him for a 7th round pick and then in the 7th round we draft a PUNTER so we release a great punter for a pick in which we draft a punter who has never played in the NFL...I hate seeing these types of moves we take 2 steps forward then 4 steps back I hope i get proven wrong though........

GO PHINS!!!

Ginn also does a little something called receiving. He may not be to polished now, but you better watch out in a few years. And the thing with Donnie came down to money.

i think the rule of thumb in the 1st is draft the best player available and hopefully draft that at a position of need. we desperately needed speed at wide receiver. if all ginn does is run down the field on an out, then he has done his job. spreads the field and makes it easier on the rest of our receivers plus running game.

but that is not all he does. he has homerun potential everytime he touches the ball and he is a great kick off guy. i think cam is trying to build a dynamic offense w/ multi facets like our defense. speed is a must when opening up an offense.

beck will be the man. we got best qb in draft

Ive been watching highlights of Ginn all day long, he truely is the fastest man in the league right now. He has speed with the likes of Bush and Hester and might even be a half step faster than both. It may be some time before he is a great receiver, but he can be special. This game is all about field position. Look at Chicago and New Orleans, both playoff teams, and both have Bush and Hetser returning for them. Any coincidence that they were both in the playoffs? We will see what Ginn can do for us.

Yes Ginn is a return man, and one hell of one too. But he is listed first as a WR. Yes he needs work on that position, and Miami will get him ready. From the clips theyve showed of Ginn against some of the top corners in the draft, he burnt them all and with just a simple little move.

I came across this statement from Charlie Casserly, the former GM of the Texans on cbssportsline.com about Ginn:

"He has foot quickness and the change-of-direction ability to do that. In fact, if you want to press him, good luck -- because if you miss him at the line of scrimmage, you might as well send the PAT defense on because you will not catch him."

yea plus if we had to sign Donnie, it would've been a massive contract, and we just want a small one. Clearly the thing you should ask is how did we pass on a draft that could've been Quinn, Kalil, and some other WR *it was a sick draft for WR, 17 in the first day, it wouldve been fine if we got one then.*

Jones was an RFA that was signed to an offer sheet for about double what we were paying him. He was a decent punter, not great nor was he a monster. We are likely to get the same production from the youngster for one third the money...seems like the right move to me...

Ginn is NOT going to be just a STer for us. Yes, he'll return KOs and punts and give us something we have never had here (and I've followed them since 1966.) He will be utilized in the passing game, likely to push Booker to the pine. He'll be used in the slot, split end and outside. He can be a decoy to open the lanes underneath or if the defenders slip a little for big gains. The thing is that he as something that is the most difficult to defend...speed and maneuverability at full speed. If a defender slips..he's gone..if he is tied up (has trouble getting off press coverage, and he likely will as a young WR (I've yet to see a WR come out and be able to beat press coverage right away) he'll learn and he can still break away if a defender lets him get the ball. The other thing is that with him out there, the defense has to...let me repeat that...HAS TO respect his speed. That has to open some things in other areas of the offense, be that other receivers or the RBs...

If all ginn does is run up and down the field then his job will be done??? Are you crazy lets hope the ninth pick and the draft can do more than run go routes up and down the field or we could of just signed a sprinter for 400,000

I'm sick of hearing how we drafted a ST player. He is a WR and schooled Ross and Hall! He gets off the line pretty well for not being a tall reciever (see footage against Ross) and has the speed to blow by guys. Stop thinking of him as just a STer he's an awesome Wide out who will gives us the fast deep threat we've lacked for what seems like forever. I"m just curious what number he will wear. 17? I'd dig that.

yes because it significantly changes the defense you are facing. if ginn plays every play next year and puts his speed to use, then defense have to play deep. instead of bring an extra man in the box and jumping all the short routes, they now how to spread out and cover more of the field. when they do that they allow more wholes for cam's offense to expliot. so by being on the field he has made everyone around him better. and when you add the playmaking intangibles, that can lead to quick scores. suddenly the defense is more on the heels. if he can stay healthy ginn has the potential to be one of the big playmakers in the nfl. just my homer opinion.

He will be a special teamer first but make no mistake about it. Cam and Mueller didnt draft this guy to be a part timer. They cant afford that.

We will see quick hitches and end arounds, quick slants, WR screens with this man moreso than anyone else. Then there will be the bomb for sure once the OL gets in place all the way.

I am not mad about the pick of Ted Ginn with all his talent. He will no doubt change the complexion of our O and defenses will have to adjust accordingly. That I do believe will free up Chambers from the slot. I hope Booker is not traded cus I think we could still use him.

The only problem for me with Ginn is hoping and praying our #9 will stay healthy through a 17 season. I have my doubts. I dont want to be right for the sake of being right.

I want to see Ginn score TD's faster than Tom Brady can puke.

Explaination:

I do not believe that has ever been the "rule of thumb" but if it was I am sure Devin Hester has changed that mentality; he single handedly won games for the Bears last year.
Furthermore, as some have mentioned Ginn jr. does more than return kicks. He is an extremely fast, quick, explosive reciever with good hands. He may not be able to start at WR right away but eventualy he will make a great #2 or #1 guy. He has all the potential, talent and athleticism in the world, he just needs to work on his rout running. That fortunately is something that can be learned. His speed on the other hand cannot be.
Ginn was in the dolphins opinion the best player available and he filled a specific need on this team. I think that is hard to argue against. He fits our offense very well. We needed someone fast and explosive to stretch the field, he does that. He also allows us to put Chambes back in the slot where he can be utilized better.

On Donnie Jones, it depends on how good this guy is. I don't know much about evaluating Punters but if he turns out to be a quality punter than the move makes perfect sense. We would have had to pay Donnie over 1 million dollars to punt the football but instead we get a guy that may be just as good or better for probably about 1/4 the cost. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Not to mention we can probably lock him away at a lower price for at least a few years.
I hope that explains things.

Ted Ginn is gonna end up having a career like Joey Gallway, you watch. As for our Punter Donnie Jones did rock, but we chose not to match the amount of money, so instead we got a 7th pick and not pay that much money.
