After reading Recent penalties trouble Dolphins - Inconsistency of calls `killing us', I am convinced that we cannot keep our scheme on D intact if we keep getting reemed by the officials. As good as Pat and Sam and even Fletcer are at man-to-man, we need to start going zone a larger PCTage of plays. Especially against guys like Blake who are not pick you apart passers. The nice thing about zone is that it gives you more flexibility with your DL and blitzes to take risk since you know that the DBs will be a certain areas and not running all over the field with their man.

I agree, and against QB's such as Blake, a zone is probably fine. But if your going to play zone on a guy like Manning, forget it.

Remember how Marino would just pick a zone defense apart?

Tough call, but this week it may work better than man.

I'm really hoping that this is the last year of the Jim Bates era in Miami. He's done a decent job keeping this defense intact but, every year, teams figure out what to expect from our guys and wind up going right at our weak spots. In the end, the defense suffers and we lose...it's time for a change.

Penalties are going to happen. The defense makes up for them later. I hate zone coverage and we tend to play better D when we play man.

I think Bates has blitzed, but at the wrong times. Im still flabergasted that all last year he couldnt bring in a package where we would put 8 men in the box. His flexiblity in a game is non existent, and blitzes are untimely. If they arent untimely then they need to be disguised more so the offense doesnt know whats coming. I think everyone has bitched about these things on here more than once. Is there anyone in dolphinland that does like bates? How about the chiefs game when gonzalez murdered us all game long? We probably made his year and got him into the probowl based off that one game! A coach is goin to get beat on blitzes everyone has to expect that, but the inflexibility of our defenses play calling from week to week is what kills us from week to week. The defense played a hell of a game against the jets. One big pass to Coles, isnt that bad, really bad timing though. Our defense needs to get turnovers for us to win though, and we arent getting many at all. Qb pressure seems to have tailed off a bit since the bills game, which could explain a portion of the problem. Facts are though are players arent in position to make a big play and thats gotta be for the most part Bates' fault. Wanny is supposed to be a big defensive coach where is he...
