Alfonso Soriano initially didn't want to play left field for the Washington Nationals, then said he didn't want to leave at the trade deadline, then was stunned when he wasn't dealt.
Now comes this bit of news: The Nationals reportedly put Soriano on waivers, something he hadn't heard about until reporters approached him before Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves.
"Oh, man. That surprised me right now," Soriano said. "I don't know what to think now."
He said neither the Nationals nor his agent had told him of the move -- although that's not unusual, given that teams are supposed to keep the waiver process secret.
Nationals manager Frank Robinson wouldn't confirm a FoxSports.com report that Soriano was put on waivers, but he did discuss the process.
"Sometime during the year, everybody's put on waivers," Robinson said.
Teams routinely do it to gauge interest in players and possible trade options, but it rarely winds up leading to a deal. Soriano said it happened to him last season with the Texas Rangers, and Atlanta reportedly recently did it with All-Star center fielder Andruw Jones.
