Hello To All.....I know I have not been posting much....but I have been around here reading. I have had some family matters to attend to the past couple of weeks....and it has been a personal distraction to many of my more enjoyable things to do....like posting about the Dolphins. But I think everything is going to be ok now...and now I should be getting back into posting around here again. Unfortunately....there is not much I can add to all the dissapointment around here. This team is in a bad tailspin right now....and the thing that really bothers you the most...is that this is the same exact team that played so inspirationally well up in Denver.....except for 2 key players....1. Jay Fiedler and 2. Oronde Gadsden. And as we have found out.....only 1 player is replaceable....GADSDEN. The other player....JAY FIEDLER.....as it turns out.....was the ONE PLAYER THIS TEAM COULD ILL-AFFORD TO LOSE. We lose RICKY WILLIAMS....we have ROBERT EDWARDS to pick up the slack....but if we lose a JAY FIEDLER.......ah....we have.....a Quarterback who is partly responsible for 12 offensive turnovers in 3 games....a guy who stands at 0-3 as a starter...and a coaching staff who is now scared to death.....to watch one RAY LUCAS drop back or even hand-off the football...at this point...in time. Its not all RAYS fault.....but he is the leader of a very unproductive offense...and there are no excuses......RAY has probably played his way right out of Miami...once this season is over with....and that is where I will start.

I have heard that the coaching staff is BAFFLED...there are no other words to describe it....about what they have wtinessed out of RAY these past 3 games. But the one thing the coaches could not imagine....is the miscues on his footwork and his inability to look comfortable in even the basic handoff. In all training camp and the pre-season....RAY really did not have that much difficulty with the offense...and the basic formations. But now....as he is the starter.....the coaches just see a guy who just looks so unnatural.....a Qb who is just not sure what decision he is to make....a QB who doesn't see the open man....but instead...will throw into double coverage. A Qb who instead of running for a first down....will suddenly re-neg on his first choice...which was to run...but instead will throw a one hopper off the turf. The coaches have talked and coached RAY to the point they are really out of new ideas.....its pretty much what you have seen.....RAY has to somehow get himself out of this nightmare.....but the question remains....HOW...and WHEN?

The other big disappointment on this team is the OFFFENSIVE LINE PLAY. When Mark DIXON could not play....the drop-off with MARCUS SPRIGGS was very apparrent. But last game...DIXON struggled...and the Dolphins just could not make much happen for RICKY against the JETS..for that matter. The holes are just not opening the same way for RICKY as he saw them early on in the season. The pass protection has also not been that good either.... I have heard that the coaching staff is not happy at all with the lack of progression that TODD WADE has showed since his great first year. TODD PERRY, JAMIE NAILS and RUDDY....have all had their share of mistakes these past 3 games. Overall....this unit has performed poorly these past 3 games....there are no excuses to make for them either.

RICKY WILLIAMS......the coaches are concerned about his fumbling now....no doubt about that. RICKY's fumble on the two yard line....coupled with LUCAS' and EDWARDS miscommunication on a basic lead handoff play was the ballgame. As for RICKY....he needs to step up his game....right now. We need him to get going....or else its going to get real ugly.

NORV"S CONFIDENCE......When is the last time the Dolphins attempted a long pass down the field? He had RAY doing some dinks and dunks...and had him moving around some.....but you can start to see....NORV is getting pretty consevative now....with what RAY's decisions will be. Lets face it....NORV....We don't have much to lose now....except for games that is.....OPEN UP THE DAMN OFFENSE....with LUCAS!! If he throws it up down the field 50-60 yards....we always can pray for 2 things....a completion would be nice....but thats a long shot.....but how about a pass interference call? Hey...if its intercepted....its as good as a punt anyway. Throw the ball downfield to CHAMBERS....get the safeties to back off RICKY once in a blue moon also. NORV is calling a scared game....and it is really unlike him. Unfortunately....NORV will probably scale it back even more...against the RAVENS.

SAGE ROSENFELDS...... I have heard that the coaches do not want to go this route.... they say SAGE is too green....and he needs a complete training camp under his belt until they can see more of him. SAGE will not play....unless RAY is injured....that is the only realistic chance of him getting in there. This is RAY's ball....WANNY will not waver until JAY comes back.

TEAM MEETING......There was a team-meeting at NEWARK AIRPORT......in the waiting gate area.....as the team was headed back to MIAMI after the Jets loss. WANNY spoke with a direct....soft-spoken voice....pleeing for the team to stop shooting themselves in the foot...and keeping the faith. He told them that they were still indeed tied for first place...and they can still put it all together.

With that said......the Dolphins have come back and have done a lot of charitable things on their off-day....together...today. I talked to SHAWN WOODEN at the mall today.....and he said that the team is focused...and there is no finger pointing at RAY.,..or at the offfense. He said that some defensive players are very FRUSTRATED......but stated that the defense has to come up with more plays also....and he is correct there.

When is the last time the Defense shook a ball out of somebdody's hands....and we took over the football at an opponenty 10 yard line? Where are the turnoaround plays on defense? Where is the key sack at the right time? Certainly the defense played well enough for the offense to score more points than the Jets this past week......but they gave up the big 84 yard drive at the tail-end of the ballgame.....putting it all on RAYs shoulders to go down the field. WANNY would not even let MARE attempt a 54 yard field goal in this game....counting on field position and his defense to help save his decision. Well...it backfired....and now we all wish for MARE to attempt that field goal. This defense always gives up big plays....whether its a screen pass....or a crossing route.....teams are getting too many big chunks....and its usuallay on third and long situations. But the one thing missing in this defense......is the lack of TURNOVERS....and just making the big stops in the critical stages of the game.

SPECIAL TEAMS......has really improved.....and one guy who is really making an impact is TOMMY HENDRICKS....the guy has been the MVP of the special teams thus far. ALso.....MINOR has done a better than average job as the kick returner....not giving up the ball.....WARD of course....is steady....but unspectacular. MARE has picked up his kicking....which of course is the key here. ROYALS punting has been exactly what the coaches have expected.....quite frankly....the Special teams have done a nice job...these past couple of games.

LAST TIDBIT.......there were at least two scouts in the Dolphins organization who really, really. lobbied for the Dolphins to draft DREW BREES 2 years ago. And those two scouts are still there.....and now looking at just about every single available Qb for the Dolphins to look at in the draft next year. I have heard that RICK SPIELMAN has told people in his inner cirlce that the DOlphins WILL NOT bring back RAY LUCAS to the team next season....he will be free to go elsewhere...as he is a free-agent anyway. Expect the Dolphins to draft a QB next season....and not only that....they will have a veteran backup to compete with SAGE ROSENFELDS as well in camp next season as well. ANd like I said....it will not be RAY LUCAS.

CHRIS CARTER...... He is going to be alright....but the only question yet to be told....is how long should he just be letting his kidneys stabilize themselves? It appears that CARTER suffered from severe DEHYDRATION...and had many chemical balance disorders in both the esophogus and kidney organs that lead to his admittance to the hospital. He was apparently optimistic that his health was improving.....but if the Doctors feel that playing football and taking hits...will interfere with his recovery.....that is going to be all there is....one game in a Dolphins uniform and out...for CC. Its not up to CHRIS....its up to the Doctors now. We should know a lot more by THURSDAY afternoon..... If CHRIS is out for the year....the Dolphins will place him on the non-football injury list....get some cap-relief.....and sign either SHAWN DAWKINS or REDIEL ANTHONY.

So in conclusion.....somehow we are still in first place.....but its like looking up....as everyone knows how the PATS and BILLS look right now.. This season can go either way......but I will tell you guys this.....if RAY continues his current play...and this team does not step it up....and I mean everyone around him....then I really think its going to be too late when JAY comes back;.to try and save the day. Ray has to win at least 1 damn game.....before JAY returns....if the DOlphins lose to the RAVENS....then I think its really time to hit the panic button....but I think one win against the Ravens....its going to mean big in the teams psyche. Right now.....this team....has no identity....no swagger at all. Its up to every single player on this team....to look at themselves in the mirror....and ask themselves....what can I do to help RAY LUCAS on SUNDAY afternoon....to help him win us a ballgame? The coaches are peturbed at the fact that too litttle of the players have really stepped up their play......despite the horrendous Quarterbacking of LUCAS.
The big question now..... What game plan will NORV TURNER run for LUCAS this SUNDAY? If its conservative.....the RAVENS are going to stack that line...take RICKY away....and then it could be deja vu all over again...
Let MCkNIGHT and CHAMBERS race down the field....and McMCICHAEL too.....one thing RAY can do....is throw the ball far.....I did not say accurately.....but far enough....not to worry as much as a simple down and out...or a pass that was intended for the inchworm in the dirt....instead of the skinny post that CHris CHAMBERS was open for the first down.

We have nothing to fear.....but fear itself. DCH

Regarding Dixon... In fairness, I doubt the ESPN cameras were showing how much trouble he's still having with that ankle. He was seriously hobbled. When the D was in he was either being treated by trainers or pacing gingerly and deliberately well behind the benches (to keep it from locking-up, I suppose). I couldn't believe he was still in the game. Spriggs ain't going to Hawaii, but I'm surprised he was still viewed as the lesser alternative.

And regarding Lucas -- I'm with the coaches on not benching Lucas -- yet. Of COURSE we all want better play at QB. But just cuz Sage ain't Ray doesn't mean he'd do any better.

There was that stretch in the second half when Lucas completed eleven of twelve -- the Jets fans around me were getting pretty quiet. I wish we had a better option right now, but the stretches where Ray has shown some steadiness are alot more to build upon than throwing Sage to the wolves.

That, our holding onto the ball a lil better, maybe a pick or a strip from the D, a break from the refs instead of thievery, a few other things, -- and we could pick-up the win we, ummm.... kinda need right now.

Some interesting insight DCH. As with the coaches, who would have thunk it that Lucas would be so out of sinc and uncomfortable running the team. It's slow going, but I think Ray is finally figuring it out a little bit. I think we have a chance to win against the Ravens, but it won't be easy, Baltimore is licking their chops over the wounded dolphins.
As for Ricky fumbling, I'm not really concerned. Did you see the pounding he took on that play!!!??? If it was me, my spine would have broken in two! And although he was credited with a fumble, I think his knee was down. My concern is more with the ineptness of our OL. This was a big question mark coming into the season and now it's obvious we need to make some upgrades here. I'm curious to see how Tim "flapjack" Ruddy is grading out.

:) :) :)

great post and welcome back DCH :D.

Any insight into why McKinney is not out there or if he looks good enough to take over for Ruddy next year at least ?

Here is a couple of points:

Ray Lucas: of course he looks good in preseason games and camps because it is just that - practice. Now the games are on the line and he faces true competition.

Dixon: he just returned from a lengthy lay-off. I am sure he needed a game and a couple of weeks of solid play.

Long passes: according tomy info we attempted 5 long passes in the game against the jets. One was an INT which was overturned by a Jets penalty. Two were when Lucas got happy feet and started to run and did not let the play develop eventhough he had the time. One was a near INT. We do attempt our 5 deep passes per game.

Defensive turnovers: it is tough when the opposing team knows that all they have to do is protect the ball and do not take any risks. It seems like they (opponents) are overly ball protective. Everybody is playing field position knowing that we will screw up somewhere. Even Favre and Bledose too an unusual low percentage of passes downfield (where most INTs occur). Its all safe..safe..safe...and play field position. Having said that our D is playing at a high pace right now who held 2 of the highest scoring offenses (Bills and Packers) to 16 and 17 points and held the Jets offense to 13 point (7 even came after a turnover in our end of the field) who just put 44 on the SD offense.

and Dixon re-injured the ankle in the game ag the Jets

Great to hear from you again DCH

...especially with the comments direct fromplayers in the camp.

I said in another post I've got to the point where I can't see where the next win is coming from. But after the Raiders beat the Broncos the other day we're not only tied for best in our division, the race for homefield hasn't started yet.

I would like to say how Ray had improved, he certainly threw some good balls. But he also thre 4 interceptions, 3 dropped and one overturned by a penalty which made his stats look better than the performance we witnessed on the tube. He has a long way to go.

Looking at the standings, we're still in this. That's what the team has to realise along with the fact that the D and special teams cannot do this alone. Go fins.

(I NEED a home playoff game in January, let's get it done).

Ive been hearing great stuff about this guy and he is gresat. Awesome article.

great info. thank you. i was hoping this would be the year jay would quiet his critics--little did i know he would do that while not playing. i'm thinking the team turns it around this week. the offense has looked a little better each week, although it does not look good by any stretch. at least the rest of the AFC is not creating separation.

I am surprised that now we plan to take a QB. Fiedler has done well this year, and if we take one, that would mean that next year will be Fiedler's last in Miami. Or are they looking at a QB as a late round choice?

I believe this is a bad time to be prepping a rookie. Having a rookie come in on 8-9 man fronts the entire time could be detrimental to his psyche. Best if we give him an entire training camp to earn that starter spot.

Well unless Ricky breaks out against 8-9 man fronts he should fall just short of 1500 yards. Which would give us a 1st, 3rd, 5th (and whatever late rounders) to work with.

Now unless someone just falls to us that we have to have then I see us backing up in the first round (heck we are probably going at a 9-7 record which could have us with a pick between 15-18) twice to the end of the 1st round to pick up a 2 3rd rounders (or a 3rd and 4th depending on the deals).

So that would give us (best case scenario) a 1st, 3rd, 3rd (or 4th) and a 5th. With a lot of QB's coming in this year it could be feasible to take a shot in the 3rd on a QB who in any given year would have been a possible late round selection (since the QB class is stacked this year).

Why do we have two 3rd round picks? I know we are missing our 4th round pick b/c of Jay Williams.
