Sounds like Messam is 100%

We're holding you accountable for "Jonas Grey" aka "Baby Cecil Collins". The dimensions and running style are very similar, hopefully that's where the similarities end.

I would be surprised if a fully healthy and recovered Jonas Gray can't make this team. The Dolphins just have to show the patience to let him actually get healthy. Year two is always the target year for a full comeback from an ACL tear. Are the Dolphins willing to wait until 2013 to get some value out of Jonas?

Gray is 230 lbs. Cecil was just over 200 lbs. Nice try but I don't see the comparison.

I hope he's not like Cecil Collins because in addition to being a pervert and a convict, Cecil was also a poor NFL tailback.

the last thing i'm worried about is rb...you could get away with pretty average guys in this o...green bay has

I'm just watching a few Cecil Collins LSU highlights to remember how he was in college, as it was a long time ago.

Cecil was a very straight line runner that did not make anyone miss, but rather aimed for contact and hoped to spin off of it or give a limp leg for extra yards. The tendency was consistent as clockwork. His instincts for avoiding tacklers and running to daylight were really pretty poor. Even when he's got an angle he'd rather run through you than around you. He had some balance issues when he tried to make any cuts to get away from wreckage, and that could be part of the reason, as he wasn't comfortable making any cuts at speed for fear of losing his balance, and would rather just run through the contact. Some players can get away with that style if they've got the power and size to back it up. In college he had an impressive ability to bull through contact, kind of reminiscent of Adrian Peterson a little. He seemed to have really good speed, and an excellent build, but the overall size/speed ratio I don't find to be as compelling as I do Jonas Gray. As it's been pointed out, Cecil was only about 207 lbs and I think ultimately that had an impact on whether he was able to bull through contact at the NFL level the way he did at the NCAA level. Adrian Peterson was not only bigger which has allowed his vicious run-through-contact nature to translate, but he's also always been more proficient at cutting away from defenders.

All that said, it's really easy to nitpick when you know the guy was not successful at the next level. Still, I don't know if I see stylistic comparisons between Cecil Collins and Jonas Gray. I think if I were to make a stylistic comparison between Cecil Collins and someone in this Draft, it would be closer to Cyrus Gray than Jonas Gray.

I remember Cecil Collins at LSU like it was yesterday. One of the best freshman RB's I've ever seen. He only played in 4 games for LSU before he got hurt, got in trouble, and had to transfer to McNeese St.

LSU had what they called the "triple-headed-monster" at tailback at the time with Cecil Collins, Kevin Faulk, and Rondell Mealey... Collins was easily the best. Every carry he ran the ball like he was high on PCP.

In his first start as a freshman against Mississippi St. he ran for 172 yards... followed that up with 232 yards and 2 TD's the next week against Auburn, and 179 yards and 1 TD the next week against Akron.... broke his leg on the 3rd carry of the game against Vanderbilt the next week, and it was the last down he ever played for LSU.

Ended up a complete waste of elite talent for sure. He had some peculiar issues going back to his highschool days at Leesville that got swept under the rug somehow.

i remember in the 1999 draft we got Cecil plus J. Johnson and Konrad in the 2nd round. Everyone thought Jimmy had finally found his RB's to make a run at the SB. Some were picking us to win it that year. i believe the 3 running backs were on the SI cover. Marino's last year. Did not work out but we were contenters for sure. Jax put an ugly end to that dream.
Ah the good old days.

I'm not sure why most of you aren't seeing the potential this guy has. For being 6'3 245 I see a very quick footed guy with tremendous upside. He has a pretty good burst for that size and weight. His only MAJOR problem being that he plays WAY too high. In this clip @1:03 you can see he runs at the line straight up and if it was against a bigger lineman he would have gotten stuffed(watch 4:47). If you look @5:14 you can see when he does lower his pads, he gets that yard against 3 defenders with no problem.

If our coaches teach this guy how to run low, he'll be a beast up the middle. Not a Brandon Jacobs(more explosive) but very very close to him.

I would also like to note that this video shows that he DOES play special teams. With Jerome plugging up 3 positions (rb/fb/spl teams) I can safely predict he is a lock for that 4th spot.

Jimmy loved Cecil Collins' talent. He was hyped to Miami before the draft. Jimmy thought he could reign him in. But when you saw Cecil run, he was not as electric as advertised, for whatever reason. Not to mention he is mentally sick and a criminal who should be locked away.

JJ Johnson was reasonably strong but talk about "just a guy." He was the definition. Pretty useless player. When I see Daniel Thomas, my fear is he ends up the next JJ Johnson.

Rob Konrad was the kid in that draft that had actual potential. He was a good athlete and had that "next Darryl 'Moose' Johnston" feel to him. But he was overly pumped up and it led to alot of nicks. He is a smart guy and retired young because he has other skills.

if Messam's healthy he's got a shot. Runs a little upright and not really a power back that bowls people over. Reminds me of Eric Dickerson. (if only)

Hmmm...Looking at some of the highlights between the two I stand corrected. I'm not sure why? But the first time I saw the highlight you posted about Gary the imagine of Collins popped into my head. But, now looking at the highlights side-by-side, Collins is a much more explosive bull-dozer! Gary is a little bit more nimble on his feet and certainly not as explosive! The comparisons you made to Greene for the Jets is definitely more accurate.

For a guy his sizes he sure plays small. If someone didn't tell he's 6+ and 200+ you would never believe it!

I agree, but maybe he is bigger now than he was in that game. I was expecting to see a massive RB who bowled Canadian linebackers over.

I hope this kid is 100%, I really do. I wanted him to make the roster and I love rooting for the underdog. I fear he is pushing himself because this might be is only shot at the NFL. I worry he will tear up his knee again.

There will be some tough decision to make. I know the media is saying that we have no talent but we are actually loaded at RB. Also, Jonas Gray is an interesting prospect for next year.

If Messam can play special teams, maybe he will make it. But they also kept Slaton because of his success in the WCO.

Maybe we keep 5 RB, and 5 WR.

One thing for sure, I can't wait to hear Training Camp reports on the RB battle.

Jonas will be put on the PUP.
He's quality when healthy though!
