In the first surprise move in the NFL cutdown to 75 players on rosters, the New England Patriots informed quarterback Kevin O'Connell that he is being released, according to a source.

A third-round choice in 2008, O'Connell was the leading candidate to be Tom Brady's backup this season after the departure of Matt Cassel. The timing of the release was particularly surprising considering Brady's right shoulder injury Friday night against the Redskins.

Miami is laughed at when they had to cut Beck, their second round pick, after just two seasons. What will the thoughts be about the Patriots, who cut O'Connell, their third round pick, after just ONE season?
 
Its also reported they may be interested in A.J. Feeley, the former phin.
Although, he actually used to back up Jay Fiedler lol.
 
I'm surprised they did it. If he clears waivers, I assume they'll resign him to their practice squad.

i guess they like the progression Brian Hoyer has made. He did look decent in his limited tiem on the field.
 
Actually as far as back up QB's, Feeley would be a better option than O'Connell is at this time.
 
Very surprised by that news.

I know he was'nt playing well in pre-season but to cut a player after one season who was drafted in the 3rd round is very quick.

In that case, the Packers might aswell cut Brian Brohm.

Right now, I guess Walters is the backup (picked up off waivers from oakland a couple weeks ago) or Brian Hoyer, a UDFA.

Rumor has them going after AJ Feely, who's likely going to be cut by the Eagles now that Vick is aboard.
 
Is guiterrez gone? I thought I saw him on tv last night or night before on another team.

And in other tx's....Bruschi hanging it up says Pats have One ILB other than a guy named Vinny Ciurciu in Jerod Mayo. Gary guyton says he is OLB on my Lindy's mag rag. He prob would end up inside. Prediction: Pats move to 4-3 move ron Brace to start on 4-3 line.

Yeah he is with Matt Cassell in Kansas now.

Eventhough you guys have Brady, I am sure that NE has to be concerned if he gets injured and has to sit out a week or so.

You guys can have AJ Feeley, that's one name I will never forget. Maybe NE could also give up a 2nd rounder for him. :chuckle:
