The Dolphins will interview Minnesota defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin on Monday for their vacant head coaching position, a source said.

Considered one of the NFL's top young coaching prospects, the 34-year-old Tomlin just completed his first season as Minnesota's defensive coordinator after serving the previous five years as Tampa Bay's secondary coach.

I've read that he's an up and comer. He's young and hungry. Perfect fit for what this team needs. It seems that WH has tried the big name hire once too often (JJ, Saban).

He is really young but he would not be the right choice the had the worst secondary in the league.

Huh? What does his scheme have to do with anything?

Because he's a runner of the Tampa 2 which means a total overhaul of this defense and the growing pains to go with it. I hate the Tampa 2...it's by nature a weak run defense and requires that you have some premier DT's to hide that problem.

How many of our players would have to be replaced to fit his scheme. Dont they play a basic cover 2 scheme. I'm not a big fan of cover 2 as the base package

 Beat me to it. Great minds think alike:lol:

most of our players are already in a tampa 2 format. JT is the perfect RE, Thomas although not atheltic is a very smart and playmaking MLB, Crowder could be our athletic WLB, Daniels is a big physical cornerback, followed by Wright, Holliday (if we resign him), or Kevin Carter moving back to DT, and/or Fred Evans we have the right pass rushing interior linemen.

Bottom line is it would take long to convert this team to a 3-4 sort of defense than it would Tampa 2.

Lets not forget the main teams that run the cover 2. Bears, Tampa Bay, Colts. All have had success using it (even the Colts last year despite not much talent on that side imo).

As for the Tampa 2 being weak against the run defense why not tell that to the Vikings who were number 1 against the run last year.

I think Tomlin would be a pretty good hire.

Sure the Tampa 2 can be annoying as hell if you don't have the DTs or the LBs to make plays (which is why the Colts D struggles. Lack of playmakers)

I also would not look at his secondary in Minny. Once Smoot was benched they did a lot better, but their front 7 did pretty well considering they A)got no pass rush and B)the worst LB corp in the league

The word on Tomlin is that he's supposedly less afraid to stray from the Tampa 2 than other Dungy disciples. He stressed the run D this year in Minny and took advantage of his 2 massive DTs to develop one of the few run Ds better than Miami's. Additionally, he dialed up a lot more blitzes than other Tampa 2 guys are known to use.

Truthfully, it doesn't look like the executives are focusing on a guy who can use the 3 - 4/4 - 3 hybrid front. So a guy like Tomlin, who has already shown flexibility with his system, is one of our better bets to use the existing personnel advantageously.

My big concern with him is that he has very few ties to good offensive coordinators. Who would he bring in on his offensive staff? Paul Hackett? Yikes.

the only bad thing I see hiring Tomlin (if he stays with the Tampa 2 trend) is a lack of blitzing. The Tampa 2 relies heavily on getting pressure from your D-Line. That's one ofthe Reason the Colts, and Vikes struggled; if you don't get pressure on the QB, you're screwed (Colts also struggled because only Marlin Jackson is a tampa 2 CB)

Also, we've got more personel for running the Tampa 2 than we do a 3/4

Our defense was top 5 this year. Why would we go to a cover 2. If it came down to Tomlin and his cover 2 versus keeping Capers and getting an offensive minded coach I would rather go that route. To me if we're going to go defense lets get someone who plays our style of aggressive attacking defense
