I know that I'm in the minority when I state that Carey should stay at left tackle, but if Sparano's latest comments are indication, the minority could be correct:

Sparano, at a media breakfast for AFC coaches, said Vernon Carey still is listed at left tackle despite thoughts of a switch to the right side. Samson Satele will return as the center. Incoming free agent Justin Smiley will be the right guard.

As for the other positions, Sparano said "At left guard there is a little bit of a hole, and right now right tackle has a hole."

We're still a ways away from the regular season, and this could be a smokescreen of sorts, but it's still nice to get some feedback on the situation directly from the horse's mouth.

What do you all think?

I would be fine with drafting a right tackle in the 2nd round, and keeping Carey at LT.
But, I would rather us draft J. Long, and let him and Carey battle for LT...loser goes to the RT.
I realize most will say if Long ends up at RT, that it was a wasted draft pick, but it wouldn't bother me all that much to have a otential pro-bowl RT. (even if it is taking him a bit high)
I think he can play LT though.
My 2 cents. =)

Never believe anything that is said by any NFL team leading up to the draft.

Yep. If Sparano came out and said Carey is going to start at RT, then it would almost guarantee we're drafting Jake Long, and no team gives away who they're drafting before the draft.

I say draft Jake Long #1, Sam Baker #32, and then let all 3 battle it out for the LT spot. Regardless, Baker and Carey have guard experience while Long and Carey could play either tackle spot. In that case, you have your OLine for many years to come with Long, Baker, Satele, Smiley and Carey. Now that would be a line we could do some things behind.

it's not exactly set in stone yet. he goes on to say this:

"You're going to see us bouncing players around trying to find the right formula," Sparano said. "Right now they're just pieces on the board. We'll put them in some spots and that's where they'll start, but not necessarily where they'll end."

I think he was simply stating things as they stood RIGHT NOW. Whether they remain that way when the season starts is another story (you don't really think he's going to still have a hole at one of the guard spots when all is said and done, do you?). My own opinion of Carey, BTW, is that he's a decent/passable LT, but hardly elite.

That had JAKE LONG at #1 written all over it, AGAIN. Look, he says: ...right now we "STILL" have Vernon Carey at LT....and that "RIGHT NOW" there is a "HOLE" at LG and "RT". This means that he is acknowledging that that is the "PROBLEM, RIGHT NOW".....that Carey is at LT and that they have holes at LG and RT.

So since he is acknowledging that "Carey being at LT" is a problem and that having "no" RT and LG "RIGHT NOW"....JAKE LONG at #1 solves a big chunk of that problem and makes it easier to solve the "LG" problem as well as it doesn't make LT to have to be resolved at #32 anymore....they can now focus on LG at #32.

This is what it is all pointing to....LT and LG being our first "two" picks of the first day of the draft.

Reminds me of when the Dan Marino era began...they used the first two round picks on a LT and LG by the name of Richmond Webb and Keith Sims.

Hopefully they can either find Henne/Brohm/Flacco still there at #57....or maybe they just leave LG for pick #57 and just make sure they land Henne/Brohm/Flacco at #32. Yeah, I think that may be the smarter move.

I tell you if Trey Darilek ends up starting you will really be sorry you let Hadnot go.

That actually would be finacially crazy. If Long loses the battle, then we are paying $30 million guaranteed for a RT, plus Vernon Carey's contract is up soon, then we would have to negotiate a contract for him as our starting LT. We would end up paying LT money to both starting tackles. If we are sold on Carey as our LT, then we wait till the 2nd or 3rd round to draft our RT.

Now if we move Carey to RT, then Jake Long should be the top pick. I was on the Chris Long bandwagon; I'd rather trade down and draft Vernon Gholston, but since we will be picking first, we should draft Jake Long and move Carey to RT.

I agree with virtually everything that's been said in this thread, but I do want to point that had Sparano said the opposite (that Carey is moving to the right tackle) some of you would have believed him and taken his words at face value.

I was thinking the same thing....Hope it comes true though if Brohm is there I might pick him
