Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said today that he would like to pick a winner in his three-man quarterback competition in time to have a starter in place for the August 9 preseason opener.

“I think that player needs to be behind the offensive line,” Sparano said. “He needs to start to find chemistry with whoever the receivers will be. If he was head and shoulders above everyone else it would be clear to us and we would start moving in that direction.”

Unfortunately, right now no one seems to be taking the lead.
“I don’t see anybody ahead of anybody right now when I watch what I’m seeing out there,” Sparano said.

Just because he would like to pick winner doesn't necessarily mean he will. Either way I think this is good news for McCown, it'll be tough for Beck to overcome or Henne to prove enough in such a short time period.

Like Sporano said, the QB would have to be head and shoulders over the others to name a starter so soon. As as it stands, there is no standout.

Time will tell.

This is such a pain in the ***.

It's incredibly difficult to gauge the talent of a quarterback entrenched in a battle for a job through a training camp/pre-season type atmosphere. Most of the time, the quarterback in the game or practice isn't operating with the starting personnel that he would see in a regular season setting. Not only that, he doesn't have the opportunity to constantly build chemistry and consistency by playing full games without looking over his shoulder for the guy that's going to replace him.
This is why we need to pick a starting QB ASAP and stick with him for the season. Trying to groom 3 guys at once just doesn't work. A team needs to know who their man is so he can work constantly with the starting offense and build chemistry and consistency.
Our best case scenario right now is probably McCown, and I'm really not happy about that, being that he is a mediocre quarterback at best.
Should Beck not beat out McCown, which I don't think he will, then his days in Miami are probably numbered. With McCown as the starter, our current regime will probably groom Henne for the future, and John Beck will be the odd man out.
That situation was probably unavoidable anyway, but I'd rather see this team groom Henne over Beck anyway. Henne is much younger, he played against vastly greater competition in college than Beck did, he has a bigger arm, and in my opinion he is just a better overall quarterback prospect.
