Sporting News about Culpepper

Nice read, thanks man! I just hope he don't do too much and reinjure it! (knock on wood) :dolphins:

Hope you're not counting on them too much. The Jets acquired Patrick Ramsey as an option in case Chad Pennington's shoulder fails, the Dolphins obtained Harrington as protection against a Culpepper setback, and the Bears signed Brian Griese as insurance in the event Rex Grossman gets hurt again. If any of them winds up starting, it's time to send the scouts out to look at Brady Quinn. -- Tom Silverstein

OUCH man, OUCH!!

Daanng, don't hold back or anything, let us know how you really feel. Sheesh. And ya'll thought *I* was harsh.

Unlike you and until Joey Flunks out again I am kinda of comfortable with him as a backup. I think he his the best backup we had since Scott mitchell

My standards are pretty high. I'm not comfortable with a backup unless I'm convinced he could be a decent starter. My personal opinion is that Joey has never been a decent starter and probably never will be one, and that is why I'm not terribly comfortable with him.

This is why I wouldn't be surprised if Cleo Lemon turned out better, because to me there's a stronger possibility (though miniscule in absolute terms) that Cleo turns out to be one of those diamond-in-the-rough future starters (a la Delhomme) than there is that Joey turns it all around. There's also a great possibility Cleo falls on his face a la Ray Lucas. Joey's more of a known quantity.

Could be a lot worse. Jamie Martin could be our backup. I shudder to even think of it.

My line of thought has always been to give a player, especially a QB, a chance at a fresh start or scheme that suits the player better. If they can't succeed with that, then the chances of them ever being a success are greatly reduced.

But I do agree that Cleo Lemon just might eventually turn out to be a better QB anyway.

Joey = life time bench warmer

The thing to note about #3 overall type guys that turn into lifetime bench warmers is they rarely stick there, IMO. They tend to wash all the way out of the league altogether...whether it's a matter of arrogance or pride or just coaches never hiring them because of how much evidence there is showing the guy will never surprise you...I dunno. Just tends to happen that way.

Joey will have to accept the hard working approach of a backup who is working his way up to be a starter, if he hopes to be a successful backup. I think a lot of washouts just kind of assume that they're good enough to be a backup because up to that point they assumed they were good enough to be a starter, and they don't work hard.

I almost always agree with you ck, but this time I think you've just gotta give JH a chance. They thought Steve Young sucked when he replaced Montana, based on what he (Young) did (or didn't do) in Tampa. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I disagree with you on this one. Hope I'm right.

I think there are some important things that differentiate Steve Young from Joey Harrington. For one thing, when Young was traded, he had only damaged his NFL value to the value of 2nd and 5th round picks. Joey was traded for a 6th that could become a 5th if Daunte spends half the year injured.

For the team's sake I hope you're right too, but I don't generally let my hopes for the best interfere with my analysis.
