The Dolphins’ Dallas Thomas, one of South Florida’s most criticized athletes the past few years, struggled again Friday. But he says he fully expects to be a starter again this season.

Laremy Tunsil has been backing him up at left guard but is expected to emerge as the starter there. That would leave Thomas, Billy Turner and Jermon Bushrod competing at right guard.

“I didn’t come in to come off the bench,” Thomas said.

Does he want to prove his critics wrong? Thomas said he didn’t have the slightest idea fans criticize him because “I’m not even on social media so I don’t see nothing, I don’t hear nothing. Social media gives people balls to say things they wouldn't say to your face. I feel like I’m doing good.”

Pro Football Focus ranked Thomas 80th of 81 qualifying guards last season, but Dolphins coaches have liked until he allowed too much penetration against the Giants.

Thomas began Sunday's practice with the starters at left guard, despite Friday's struggles. But Tunsil later got some first-team work, with Thomas flipping to right guard.

Good news imo that Thomas sounds defensive, he sees what's coming. Wanting him out of the starting lineup is one thing, but when he says that he feels that he's "doing good", that causes resentment. He stinks, he's not doing good, his lousy play hurts the offense and he should acknowledge it. He's living in a freaking bubble, and why that is allowed and he's still starting (gulp) is beyond me. Making Tunsil earn it is one thing, but the end of this farce HAS to be near. It's time for max reps for the good players, weed out the garbage.

While I want Tunsil in the starting line right away and would have started him at LG from Day 1, I won't panic until Thomas is starting in Seattle. I will also consider the reason for Tunsil's draft-day slide. If not for immature decisions, Tunsil is a top-5 pick. No one thinks he's a bad guy, but people did question his maturity, and some also question how serious he can be. If Miami also views these as concern areas for Tunsil - despite what they say publicly - they may be willing to sacrifice some short-term success for life-long lessons. In other words, it only makes sense to keep Tunsil off the first team if you think Tunsil the person has to work harder to get to where he should be - that he needs the lesson.

What's the coaching staff's fascination with this guy?

I am in complete shock Dallas Thomas is still in the team. 100% I believe that he has something on the organization. Unbelievable...

Tunsil smoked weed and took some money from coaches so his mother could pay the electric bill- I don't care and furthermore the NCAA can go screw themselves. By all accounts I've come across he's been hard working, respectful and a pleasure to be around- he's been fine and he seems like a good natured guy. No hints or whispers of misbehavior, immaturity or anything else.

And he's better than Thomas, that's the bottom line. He needs some tweaking as per moving to Guard, picking up stunts, etc., his timeline to getting at full speed is unknown. But what IS known is that Dallas Thomas is a better practice player than game player, and in games he sucks (ps Dallas I just mentioned that on social media- was that wrong?). He almost got Tannehill killed in the first series, pushed back into Tannehill by a player he outweighs by 50 pounds. Dear Dallas, you stink. You've always stunk. We're lucky that Tannehill hasn't been severely injured yet, imagine the s*** storm coming to Gase if Tannehill is hurt as a result of a Thomas gaffe when Tunsil is on the bench. Something to think about...

Every rep that Thomas takes at 1st team LG is slowing the process of the INEVITABLE, which is Tunsil taking Thomas' starting job. Barring injury of course, which can change a lot on that OL. It's not that Thomas is kind of bad, it's that he's horrendous. His lack of balance issues are striking, ergo the bear on roller skates routine we see so often. His lousy play goes a long way to stifling the offense, and he's a danger to Tannehill. I expect Tunsil to be named the starter before the third pre season game. Good riddance, and seriously- if he makes the roster instead of Anthony Steen or any backup of that caliber, it'll be a mistake. He doesn't just have to be waived, he has to be wiped from our memories and expunged from the record. Start Laremy Tunsil now.

This guys been given as much rope as if we used the first overall pick in The Draft on him.....cut him and get somebody who can play in this league because he CANNOT. Geezus Gase your going all Philbinny on this thing.

If Dallas Thomas emerges as the starter come opening day then new coach Gase has lost me as a fan. I wouldn't trust any evaluation or game plan or anything involving thinking from him or his coaches.

There are only a few people on the board that truly know X's and O's. But almost any of us can watch a game and see the glaring weakness that is Dallas Thomas. This is his 3-4 year and the guy looks just as bad year 3-4 as year 1. ENOUGH!

He's a really nice guy i hear. Well %$%%$ go play with your kids! We need a football player.

Agreed.. I was just thinking about this heading back from the gym. I was thinking the coaches are by necessarily disciplining him, but are really going to make him earn it and show them he wants it and won't f up.
i meant to quote offerdahl..

I think yiu have missed the point, pretty badly to be honest.
It isn't that he smoked weed(mind you it's still against the nfl substance abuse policy) it's how careless he was. Allowing himself to be video taped in the gas mask incident. He has a history of breaking the rules. Whether you agree with the nfl or not, it's the rule. And we saw what happened to Dion Jordan bc he liked to smoke some weed.
