Sports Buzz Wednesday night report

### Former Herald colleague Jeff Darlington, now doing good work with NFL.com, reported today that offensive coordinator “Bill Lazor’s relationship with players is rocky” and that “his abrasive tenor has worn thin on some.”

Three reactions: 1) We’re not surprised. We heard earlier this season that some players were taken aback because he’s so demanding. He wants things done his way and he’s not shy about expressing that.

2) This shouldn’t be a concern. The Dolphins’ offense and Ryan Tannehill, while still inconsistent, are performing better than they did under Mike Sherman. Regardless of whether all his players like him not, Lazor has generally done a good job.

3) There are a few offensive players on the team who aren’t happy about their role; it’s easy for most Dolphins fans to figure out who they are. None of those players are going to feel warm and fuzzy about Lazor, though none of them obviously has criticized him publicly.

### With Cortland Finnegan out, the Dolphins want to see one of their second-year corners distinguish themselves. Though Jamar Taylor and Will Davis have had their moments, neither has played as consistently as coaches want.

Taylor said he has heard some people speak critically of his performance against Detroit and quibbles with that portrayal.

“I gave up a pick route and an under route that I hadn’t seen in a game before. I won’t make the same mistake again,” he said. “But I competed my butt off. I think I played pretty good.”

### Ja’Wuan James said before moving to left tackle to replace injured Branden Albert during last Sunday’s game, he hadn’t played left tackle since high school except some snaps against Dallas in the preseason and one snap against Green Bay.

### Dolphins players seemed more amused than annoyed by Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin saying Buffalo would beat Miami’s “ass.”

“Don’t make those kind of comments before a game,” Mike Pouncey cautioned.

### Now at right tackle, Dallas Thomas cannot be overwhelmed by Mario Williams on Thursday like he was against Tampa’s Gerald McCoy in preseason when Thomas was playing guard. But coaches insist Thomas is much improved since August.

“I thought he hung there and competed well the other day,” Joe Philbin said of Thomas, who was rotating at left guard before moving to right tackle. “You figure, hey, you are playing left guard, then the next play you are playing right tackle and you’re on the road against a pretty good defense and some pretty good players. I thought he held his own.”

### How has Mike Pouncey done at right guard? “I think he’s done a nice job,” Philbin said. “I like the group that we’ve had out on the field. I like the way they compete. I like the way they work together. I like the chemistry of those guys. It’s a good group, a smart group, tough guys.”

Pro Football Focus rates him 56th of 78 guards, with three sacks and 10 hurries allowed.

Hopefully Lazor stays a while and gets the WR's that fit his scheme.

plenty of guys from '70-'72 bitched all up-n-down about Shula, boohoo.. ended up in "Perfectville" and sister city "Nearly Perfect"..

If these guys have reduced roles, it's their own fault. They can't say Landry doesn't deserve playing time

The reason people are whining is that Landry's offense is NOT designed to feature mediocre *playmakers* -- that is, playmakers in their own minds.

Some insanely non-talented WRs would love for the offense to be run through them, so they they could get their pedestrian stats. Nope.

Lazor's offense is designed to maximize playmakers, expecting WRs to be able to consistently beat single and off-coverage. If you can do that, you have a high role. If not, bye.

The problem is that Lazor's offense also needs a fairly good TE -- vast spaces in middle and down seams and between levels. LOTS of plays left on the field simply because the TE Clay is not that good AND that Hartline is worse the farther from the sideline he gets. AND that Hartline can only win on 24 percent of his downfield patterns.

IF Miami gets a real TE and real 2 WR --- WITH FREAKIN OL DEPTH -- Look out.

* Taylor scares me at CB ALMOST as much as Thomas at RT. How he thought he "played well" Sunday is beyond me.
* Thomas at RT is a brutal proposition.
* Disappointing the players are more "amused" than "angry" with the Bills player talking smack is disappointing, but I should not be surprised with the chill that Joe Philbin has put on this team.

/sigh what a post!

This offense has about 5 player I like or love...

Ryan Tannehill
Jarvis Landry
Mike Wallace
J. James

OK 4...and I only like Wallace as a 2nd option...

jamar played fine for what he saw...i'd like to know who exactly was the goat on that 28 yard crosser to tate...seemed like a pass off coverage to me but i guess we will never know...he's learning with game reps...the lack of patience around here with talent is hilarious...this board would rather wait on guys that have no talent than the ones that do...corner is not a step on the field and dominate position unless you are one rare breed...taylors a pro he's got the necessary skills...finnegans nothing special anyways

when lazor took the job he took it only because he was given full autonomy of the offense they said...he might be one of those guys that thinks his system is more important or better than the players who play in it...thus the napolean complex about allowing tannehill the freedom to audible etc...all i know is its got to change...we've already had too many lost yardage plays from it...and i dont blame the players if they had issue with the play vs the lions that lost 9 yards vs the clean slot blitzer the qb stared right at presnap telling me he saw it and would have accounted for it but wasnt allowed to check out...that's bs plain and simple...had the qb come to the los and never recognized it then that's when i would be less inclined to give him the ability to check out at the los...but he has always shown a veteran ability to id and account for things...take off the damn training wheels...my frustration grows

not hard to think who's complaining on offense...hartline cause hes getting barely any look at the ball wallace cause he thinks he's a 100 yard plus receiver every week and he's not gibson cause landry took his reps and job and mathews cause he thinks he should be playing more...i'm sure that's all of who darlington talked to and does not surprise

this dallas thomas thing if it doesnt blow up in our face at right tackle i will be floored...daryl tapp and jason jones are not good indicators of future return from the position...

Nate Garner will be in at RT by the end of the first quarter.

My thoughts exactly. Its Hartline and Gibson.

While Wallace has complained about the offense, he complained about their ability to execute and be consistent as a team, and he never criticized the playcalling or his lack of targets. I dont think he is one of the players Darlington refers to.

WHAT?? You think taking a LG and moving him to RT on a short week vs one of the leagues best pass rushers might not end well?? What a revelation. I agree and it won't be Thomas's fault. You put players in position to succeed, not fail. Why move 3 positions when you only have to move one? I don't agree with this at all. We will be weaker at LT, RT and MUCH weaker at LG. When if you just replace Albert with next man up you could help him all game with a TE or RB. Now you need to help 3 different positions and the communication will be all messed up.

You say you are worried about Thomas at RT, well so am I but I am more worried, MUCH more worried about Shelley at LG. He was beaten on every pass play in the first half vs the bills in the first meeting. If he hadn't gotten hurt at halftime last game I don't think Ryan would still be alive. He is the worst OG in pass pro that I have ever witnessed as a pro. Turner, Garner, or a DT will be brought in to replace him or I would advise punting on 1st down and hope our defense and STs can score. If Shelley is in there our offense will put points on the board for Buffalo.
