Starks has been standing out for Miami lately. A longtime defensive tackle in a 4-3 alignment, he has completed a 1 1/2-year transition to end in a 3-4 scheme. He is starting for the first time since 2005 with the Tennessee Titans.
"It wasn't easy for him," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. "He started out a little bit slow."
Starks, who signed as a free agent in March 2008, now is comfortable enough in the Dolphins' system to exploit his rare combination of size (6-3, 305), strength and athletic ability.
In the last four games, Starks has 3.5 sacks. This season, he leads Miami defensive linemen with 26 tackles.
"He easily could finish with nine or 10 sacks," linebacker Joey Porter said. "I told him if he does that, he'd be on his way to being a known player in this league."
Starks, who is in his sixth season, made quite an impression on national TV Sunday with a career-high seven solo tackles, including his back-to-back stops of Sanchez on the Jets' final drive.
