We should start negotiating with the 1st round player or players we like now too set the price. It is legal too negotiate beforehand and that way avoid the preseason problems with contract negotiations. A good example is Jamarcus Russell last year with the Raiders. We wouldn't be tipping our hand because of multiple players involved and could also keep the numbers down alittle if possible.

I don't know about legality, but there is precedence for it happening. How do you think Mario Williams got his contract?

I think it would be a good idea from nothing more than a leverage standpoint. Leverage between us and the player, as well as leverage between us and possible trading partners.

It can be done, Mario Williams signed the 1 or 2 nights before the draft at the # 1 pick. We could play the guys agents who we would pick off each other to try and get a discounted deal. Some agents simply won't go for it and others are open to it. The idea is good for saving $$$ if we can't trade out. We will see....

I Fixed the link for you.

Safe bet negotiations will start soon.

yeah it is 100% legit to sign a player beforehand only if you have the first pick in the draft.

I would do it a week or so before the draft. Like mentioned here I would approach 3-5 players you want and say " this is what we are offering for the first. If you don't take it fine, but try negotiating a higher contract 1-4 pics later in the draft".

Looking at it from a negotiations point of view, we can start really sending smoke signals now w/ Chris or Jake or hell for that matter all top five projections. I say this only from a point to drive to other teams we are serious in signing "their" player and maybe we can force a trade. Maybe?

If you start negotiation for 3-5 guys under the pretense of sign ability.

Your NOT getting who you really want, your getting whoever is the cheapest.

Using that scale, draft a kicker

Adding to what NorFlaFin said, I heard that the Raiders wanted JaMarcus Russell all along but they couldn't agree on any common ground prior to the draft. Calvin Johnson's camp, who realised that they were probably not going to be picked #1 overall was more flexible in negotiations so if you just went by the money scale, the Radiers should've taken Calvin Johnson.

Luckiy or not so luckily, this Dolphins could pretty much get help everywhere other than RB so you can draft by whoever is easiest to sign. It probably won't be Gholston because him coming out a year early is an indicator, to me at least, that the most important thing to him is every little cent he can get.

If they are still trying to trade the pick maybe they feel like this may show their hand?

I agree we should definitely negotiate with our selection before draft day, but i just cant see the tuna tipping his hand which way he is gonna go. He likes to leave every option open until the last minute and i some what expect him to do that.

If Miami is targeting Gholston or Jake Long I would offer them a contract letting them know that if Miami takes Chris Long instead those two would go between picks 2 and 6. So I'd offer them a deal based on #3 pick Joe Thomas or #4 Gaines Addams got last year plus 10%. The player still gets huge $$$ and the prestige to say he was the #1 overall pick.

Commentators and Mayock on Mike and Mike radio this morning that Bill Parcells said yesterday that if BP is forced to draft no.1 that player will need to be signed sealed and delivered before the draft...

I think the point is that you have these players rated as equal on your draft board... So in essence you are getting equal value.
