The fanciful talk about last season's six-game winning streak and its lessons learned carrying over for the Dolphins this season has vanished as indisputably as the streak itself.

The Dolphins didn't pick up where they left off. They didn't communicate as if they had been together awhile; they missed blocks and missed assignments.
And they lost.

So now the Dolphins start over from scratch, which is exactly what they did Monday in their preparations for Sunday's home opener against Buffalo.

''It is surprising [things didn't carry over] because I thought we'd come a long way with the six wins last year and the first units doing pretty good in the preseason this year,'' defensive end David Bowens said Monday. ``It's like a wake-up call or a slap on the back. The sense I got from the meetings and how we approached it today is the same feeling we had after the Cleveland loss last year.

``There's a real sense of urgency now, which is good, because we can't wait six or seven games to get on track. It has to be right now.''
