and how it should be addressed?

We've all been agonizing over who we should take in this year's draft and free agency, and there is no true right way of going about it. I would like to throw my two cents in it, so hear me out.

One thing is for sure, the front office is going to have to be thorough in the evaluating process because we're starting from scratch. This is the least talented roster we've had since we were a franchise team.

When it comes to building a team, we have to start from the ground up. Keep in mind; it's not about collecting talent, it's about assembling a team. We are not going to turn this team around with one draft and a couple of top-tier players signed from free agency. I like what Belichick tells his team, "The strength of the wolf is in the pack." This makes so much sense when assembling a team. So how do we go about this....

This is where Parcells, Ireland, and Gaine are going earn their money. Let's face it folks, we are not an attractive team right now that can lure top-tier free agents and convince them to sign with us. This is when we tear out a page from the Patriots blueprint and make it our own. Our player personnel guys will have a huge challenge in front of them, because it will be up to them to first; find quality discount players to strengthen the foundation of this team. So it is not a smart move to break the bank to sign Asante Samuel who will demand Nate Clements money, he is not going to help us get to the Super Bowl next year, we need to spread that money around to bringing in quality discount players. Remember, we are rebuilding from the ground up. The Pat's Bill Belichick & Scott Pioli were successful early on in finding players such as Mike Vrabel (who wasn't cutting it in Pitt), David Patten, and Otis Smith. Before these guys became Pats, they were underused and underappreciated players. We need our scouts to go out and find these type of players.

Also, some tough choices will have to be made. Such as, do we keep aging veterans and leaders around, like Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Joey Porter, and Vonnie Holliday. For example, the Pats made some tough decisions of their own by releasing players such as Ben Coates, Lawyer Milloy, and Deion Branch. Do we cut any of the veterans to secure more cap space for our future? Although we have plenty of room right now, you can never have too much. Do we try to trade any of them for picks? This option is something definately worth looking into, because by the time this team is really ready, J.T. ,Zach, and probably Holliday will be on the other side of 35.

One other thing I do agree 1000% with Belichick on is his philosophy on the quickest way to change a team, at least on the defensive side of the ball. You have to sign smart, fast, and verastile linebackers. I believe linebackers are the heart & soul of a defense, especially in a 3-4 defense, and a defense should be built around them. Having said that, I was disappointed when we drafted Ted Ginn Jr, becasue I was hoping we drafted Pat Willis who went two picks later. I was also disappointed we couldn't trade out of the #2 spot when we drafted Ronnie Brown because I wanted Shawn Merriman, but since I knew if we couldn't trade out, that Ronnie Brown is the pick to make at #2. Although we didn't get these guys, I am happy with Brown and Ginn becasue these guys will make our offense, young and explosive, which is something we were missing for a very long time on that side of the ball.

Finheaven brethren...we have to realize that this team has suffered from years of mismanagement and poor personnel decisions through drafting and free agency. There is no over night cure for this team because the damage is too deep. It is going to be a process, and unfortunately some of the players we come to admire and love will probably not be here when this franchise rises back to the top. Parcells is putting together a pretty good staff, and I see a very bright future for this team because we have the right people in place who posess the ability to discover young talent, and have the capacity to making the tough decisions. The kind of decisions that Cameron, Mueller, and Wann-Spiel couldn't make for this team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!

agreed huge. as far as us not being an attractive market - its miami - players are gonna want to come regardless of how bad we are. maybe not the very top tier free agents, but, like you said, we dont want them anyway. teddy lehman from detroit comes to mind as a forgotten linebacker, so to speak. definitely agree about linebackers being the heart and soul of the d - i wanted willis last year bad. great post.

about cutting ties with the older players, business wise it makes sense. but do want to become the faceless evil empire like the patsies and discard players because theyve gotten too old? if we get the right value, im all for it. but if we trade taylor for like a fourth rounder - not gonna be pleased at all.

I agree 100%. No top tier FA this year. If the Fins are going to shell out a contract, bring in a top tier FA offensive lineman. I think fixing the OL quickly is important to the development of our young QB and recievers. I think the fins did in fact make some strides this year, Satele has been extremely impressive. If we can sign a veteran guard and find another piece of the puzzle in the draft, I think it would really start to show.

Ireland's drafting stat's are unbelievable. I know it's posted on another thread somewhere on the site but I'm lazy and won't go find it. Something like 24 of 25 guy's he's picked made the team, and somewhere around 17 of those players played in the playoffs last week. That is staggering when you look at the draft's the fin's have had over the past few years.

For the first time in YEARS, since Shula, Wayne finally got it right with staffing. We finally have experienced, seasoned, proven winners running the operations. Our new GM is a wiz kid when it comes to spotting talent, and getting quality players deep the draft, which is exactly what this team is going to need to do.

I sincerely believe however that even without going after big name FA, the fin's can make a quick turn around in the matter of a year. Maybe not a tier 1 or even tier 2 team in the league, but a team that could provide an exciting and enjoyable season for it's fan's next year.

Very good read, thanks for that..I agree 100 %, and I think Parcells does to.

This is a great point you just made. During the early stages of our rebuilding, a big investment on a young proven offensive lineman is probably the only exception to the rule. But we may not even have to go that route, because I think LT Travelle Wharton could come at fairly reasonable price.
