I was unimpressed with the hiring of Dan Henning as the new OC (I wanted Carmichael), and after looking through Football Outsider's DVOA databases, I'm even more worried.

I wrote a short analysis and compiled a chart showing the results of Henning's offenses in Carolina.

For a guy who likes to run the ball so much, he has never really been successful at doing it. Granted, I realize that personnel affects how well you can execute your schemes, but it's not like Henning is going to be inheriting a wealth of talent in Miami.

After looking at those numbers, what do you guys think about Henning?

I really, REALLY hope that Sparano is calling plays....thats all I can say.

Hopefully Sparano oversees the playcalling and if he doesnt like a play being called will take control.. Remember, Sparano also needs to save his neck too and the HC always takes the heat

Didn't everyone whine and cry like a bunch of 2 year olds when our last coach did that?

The thing I see here is we better get a running back who can stay on the field!

The panthers consistently made the play offs with Henning as the OC, and Fox is very very conservative.

Funny thing is, one of those years Stephen Davis was in the top 3 in rushing in the NFL.

you forget, the only reason why everyone whined and cried was because of WHO (Pisslarky) he let call the plays... Besides, Cam said he would be calling all the pays from day one, so he should have lived up to his word, Sparano did not tell us he would be calling the plays.. Two completely different scenarios

Why is it different. Everyone pissed and moaned that Cam took on too much by being the head coach and calling the plays. Now since Henning has been hired you want Sparano to do the same.

That is ridiculous!

well I only speak for myself, not for everyone, and although I thought Cam was takign on alot, I thought he was still able to call the plays, so it would be wiser for you not to stereotype me into this "everyone" group you are speaking of...so in that sense, I hope Sparano oversees the playcalling, if it starts to get bad of course...

To answer your question regarding "everyone", I quess you should make a thread so "everyone" sees it and they can answer for themselves

I don't think parcells would have hired him if he thought he couldn't succeed here. The past is what it is.

I'm going to save my judgement for the end of next season on Henning and our whole new staff for that matter.

Also it can be a bit worrying, but can it get much worse than rock bottom? I mean if it does get worse its only one less win. I think he'll achieve better than that in 2008

Exacty. Let's give the guy a shot. Parcells seems to approve, that's good enough for me.

How about we have our OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR call our plays and let our HEAD COACH be a HEAD COACH.

If everyone would like to chime in with their opinions please feel free!

I dont want to see a head coach calling plays. It bogs down their ability to do game management things that are important, time management, ect. These things were huge problems for the dolphins last year and I believe cost us a couple wins. That doesnt matter much for a team who won 1 game, but for a team that won six or seven it can be the difference between the playoffs and going home.

Where are the stats for all of the NFL offenses that Henning led prior to joining the Panthers?

Moreover, were are details on yards-per-carry?

This smells like an incomplete and limited analysis to me...

I dont have a problem with that, unless he starts calling crap plays, like half back pass for a 2 point conversion, or a end around on 3rd and 2 that ends up for a loss... Sparano called the plays in 06 in dallas so I dont have a problem with him calling plays if Hennings proves to be inept at it... And isnt it a head coaches job to be the boss of the other coaches including coordinators... that was my understanding of what a HC does... So by him overseeing Henning, he is being a HC...
