I'm tired of reading "opinions" of which kicker is our best option.
Here's the cold-hard facts on FG kicking:
Mare
Career (9 years):
Total: 219/267 (82%)
40-49: 53/73 (73%)
50+: 13/24 (54%)
Last 3 years:
Total: 59/75 (79%)
40-49: 15/18 (83%)
50+: 7/11 (64%)
Vinatieri
Career (10 years):
Total: 263/321 (82%)
40-49: 70/99 (71%)
50+: 8/17 (47%)
Last 3 years:
Total: 76/92 (82%)
40-49: 20/26 (77%)
50+: 0/4 (0%)
Vanderjagt
Career (8 years):
Total: 217/248 (87.5%)
40-49: 65/81 (80%)
50+: 14/21 (67%)
Last 3 years:
Total: 80/87 (92%)
40-49: 24/27 (89%)
50+: 1/2 (50%)
Edinger
Career (6 years):
Total: 135/180 (75%)
40-49: 48/67 (72%)
50+: 16/24 (67%)
Last 3 years:
Total: 66/94 (70%)
40-49: 21/31 (68%)
50+: 9/14 (64%)
Conclusions:
1. Edinger is definitely a step DOWN from the other 3 in accuracy.
2. Mare has the strongest leg.
3. Mare attempted 11 50+ FGs (making 7) in the last 3 years compared with Vinatieri (0/4), and Vanderjagt (1/2).
4. If we had Vinatieri/Vanderjagt, we wouldn't "go" for 50+ FGs very often because they lack the strength/accuracy from 50+.
5. It's definitely a MYTH that Vinatieri is a "money" kicker, especailly over the past 3 years (77% from 40-49, vs. 83% Mare, 89% Vanderjagt). He's just been fortunate to have made a couple of big kicks in front of a national audience (I bet Mare would've made the same kicks if given the chance). He hasn't made a 50+ in over 3 years, and only attempted 4 of them. I can see now why NE is letting him go for the price.
6. Vanderjagt definitely is accurate, but weak-legged. He hardly attempt anything 50+. Maybe his accuracy is "boosted" by NOT attempting as many long, hard FGs. Mare is nearly as accurate (83% vs. 89%) from 40-49 yards over the past 3 years. Plus, Mare's leg is stronger (thus, we can "go" for 50+ FGs instead of punting, and Mare can handle Kick-offs).
And wouldn't Vinatieri & Vanderjagt be MORE expensive than Mare???
Thus, my pick is definitely: MARE
