Well I think everyone knows that right now we are on a pace to convert on 3rd and 10 or longer about 1 time every 273 games. Well there are obviously things we need to do better in those situations. But, what we need to obviously try and do is.....STAY OUT of those situations where we dont excel.

It is IMPERATIVE for this team to gain positive yardage on 1st down. Some may suggest we pass more on 1st down, and well we kinda have been. A good 5-6 yard gain on a 1st down pass is a great solution. But, you must still have balance. We have to improve RUNNING the ball on 1st down.

Another obvious solution to that, is to simply run BLOCK better. Yes, that would indeed help. However, I have another resonable solution to this problem.

And you might ask....."But WV, how do you suggest we stay out of 3rd and long more often?" Well Im glad you asked. There are a couple of ways to make 3rd and long a less frequent situation for the phins.

1) Smash a guitar over Ronnie Browns head and remind him to stop ****ing being so god damned hesitant when he gets the ball. ON SEVERAL occaisions today I noticed Ronnie up to his old tricks. Here is Ronnie presented with the opportunity to gain 2 or 3 yards on first down, but of course he stutters instead of exploding when those yards are there and winds up getting no gain. So we could begin to smash him over the head with something whenever he does this so he might remember to just explode up in there and take the 2 or 3 that are there, given the fact that we have so much trouble with 3rd and long.

2) An easier solution would be to just begin giving the ball on 1st downs more often to RICKY!!!!!!!!!!!

Ricky you see is MORE ADVANTAGOUS to the phins because of this little fact about how we cant convert 3rd and anything more than 8 yards. Ricky you see is far more explosive than Ronnie and if you amatures havent noticed he seems to just bust up in there and get 2 or 3 yards when its there. Ricky explodes and then if he gets through starts to try and shift for a big gain, whereas Ronnie is looking to stutter and get a big gain when it isnt there.

This is why Ricky would be so much better for this offense on a regular basis. But, Im probably the only person who has noticed this fact and the only person who was IRATE during the end of that game when it seemed Mare was going to beat us with a long FG late in the game because of Ronnie on 1st down carry before we punted. Camarillos 8 yard gain wouldve been a 1st down had Ronnie taken the 2 yards THAT WERE THERE, but alas he hesitated as usual where Ricky wouldve exploded and picked up the 2-3 yards. That is crucial for us on 1st down.

Ronnie did this earlier in the game as well on the series where we converted on a 4th and 1 with the FB. He also almost killed us in the Denver game, but of course Ricky bailed him out with a huge catch to set Ronnie up for the stat whore TD on that drive of the century to cap that win. I was loving Henning on that drive because he kept throwing it on 1st down when he knew we needed to stay out of 3rd and longs.

It is CRUCIAL for this team to gain some positive yardage on 1st downs to stay out of these situations. I just knew we were screwed on that drive as soon as they gave Ronnie a 1st down carry. Fortunately, Ricky bailed us out with that catch.

3) STOP going wildcat on 2nd and 10.(Unless of course its that handoff to Ricky sweeping around

). We just arent gaining enough yardage to get out of 3rd and long when they do this.(Unless of course they gave it to Ricky. He seems to be doing quite well gaining 3-4 or more yards on that play) But, basically we need to forget about running on 2nd and 10 for the most part and just try and get some good 5-6 yard gains out of the passing game here.

4) Trade Ronnie Brown already. I know you guys love him, but he is killing us right now. 2 weeks in a row we have dodged some serious bullets that were fired at us by Ronnie himself. Well he is getting help from the geniuses calling these plays that he is killing us on, that put us in 3rd and longs, which we obviously struggle beyond belief picking up.

Reality is the dude has played like 2 good games and over the past 5 weeks has been outplayed by Ricky. And the biggest key is what Im pointing out. Ricky EXPLODES and Ronnie hesitates. And when you consider how critical it is for this team to gain positive yardage on 1st downs and STAY OUT OF 3rd and long, its really a no brainer to start giving Ricky the bulk of these opportunities. Hell, we might just be better off if Ronnie gets injured again. Im not wishing injury upon the guy, but whether you want to believe it or not, he is killing us right now with his hesitation at the LOS.

Finally, NO I DONT HATE RONNIE. I think Ronnie is a good football player. Its not like he's Beck or Daunte, or Reggie Howard or something. Ronnie has skills that we can utilize. But, reality is whether you homers like it or not is Ronnie has done nothing for us but, put us in bad situations on 3rd down over the last 5 weeks. He has stat whored a few TDs but, he has been bailed out two weeks in a row from costing us serious playoff position. He already hurt us vs. the Jets with that wasted TO too. And face it, Ricky is just a better player.

EDIT: Let me add that I wanted to post this last week as I have noticed how big of a problem it has been for us over the last few weeks. In fact I mentioned posting this in another thread last week, but I never did because I know how much you guys love some Ronnie. Hey, Im not just making this stuff up to try and bash Ronnie. Its there. Its on the film. I watch the games. Im not pulling it out of my ***.

I was also hesitant to post it because honestly I felt like Ronnie was going to bust out with a huge game today. Instead I saw more of this problem with him failing to take the 2-3 yards that are there if he just explodes instead of waiting for something to set up where he might gain 10 yards.

Look guys, we have to stay out of 3rd and long. We just arent going to all of the sudden start converting a ton of these. We have to gain yardage on 1st down. We need to get the ball to Ricky ALOT more than Ronnie on 1st downs when its a run play. He is just better at exploding to the line and getting positive yardage, then if he gets through worrying about making a big gain.

Ronnie failing to get positive yardage on 1st downs and 2nd and 10s has almost beaten us two weeks in a row now. In fact, if it werent for Ricky with that huge catch in Denver and the defense at the end today, we wouldnt have been bailed out of it.

I like your analogy. i got flamed for this last week but Ricky has that split second ability that the great ones have. Ronnie does not. Now I saw a play that ronnie was in the backfield and drove the linebacker three yards forward before he went down. If Ronnie had Rickys instincts at the line of scrimmage he would be Walter Payton.

Some very good points. I posted a thread earlier in the week about us not being able to convert on third downs. Still seems to be the MO at this point AGAIN...

One thing though, if camarillo had turned up field on that catch instead of running laterally, he may have gotten the first down himself. You catch the ball and turn upfield. Maybe a small gripe but seriously he could have picked up 2-3 yards had he turned up field.

Your points are well supported and infuriateing. I'm glad you are a poster here.....That said; :azmang:

Nice Jeff Jerret reference as well.

Ronnie has some serious power. Hey, he is a good player. Im not suggesting Ronnie is a bum or anything. This is just an honest critique of something that is noticable for anyone who cares to look. And the fact is, not gaining yardage on 1st down can kill this team because of our innability to convert on 3rd and long.

Thanks, and who is Jeff Jerret?

It didn't take long for the anti-Ronnie Brown contingent to rear it's head with these magical "he's been indecisive" assertions.

WV - if you're interested, I'll pull my play-by-play notes and film and see if I can break down how many of Ricky's yards came on runs up the middle or off-tackle. Based on memory, I would say like 10-20 tops.

The reality is that neither back is gaining yardage consistently up the middle. Most of our big ground games come on misdirection sweeps (like the two that Ricky got today) or out of the Wildcat. The reason is due to poor offensive line play not "indecision" by Ronnie Brown.

So which one is it?

Are you suggesting that Brown is a bum or not?

Both of these statements are yours, so excuse me if I get a little confused by you.

P.S. Like I said, let me know if you're interested in having me pull Ronnie and Ricky's yardage statistics on runs up the middle or off tackle. I think you'll find that Ricky is every bit as "indecisive" as Ronnie when he's dealing with defenders in the backfield and his offensive lineman getting pushed deep into the backfield.

I dont think he is a bum at all. I think he is a good football player. I like Ronnie. But, HE IS KILLING US on 1st downs lately. You can make an argument that he cost us the Jets game already with that burned TO not knowing the play.

And yea, I was completely IRATE during the tail end of todays game when he kept failing to gain any yardage on 1st down when there were 2-3 yards to be had if he had just exploded to the line and then worried about making a cut if he gets past the first level. On an ordinary team, this wouldnt be that huge of a deal. However its well known we simply cant convert on 3rd and long, therefore it is imperative we stay out of third and long. Therefore, we MUST gain some yardage on 1st downs.

Ricky's skill set IMHO is just more advantagous for this team than Ronnie's is when it comes to getting the bulk of the carries on 1st downs. Thats all. Im not suggesting never using Ronnie's skills. The wildcat has been good for us for the most part. We can use Ronnie. But, at the same time, we can also use a 2nd round pick if someone would ever offer one for him.

I dont think Ronnie blows. I just think given how we struggle on 3rd and long and how Ricky explodes to the LOS and Ronnie sometimes gets in a funk of NOT doing so, we would be better off running Ricky more on 1st downs and pretty much featuring him.

I think Sparano has been saying as much without saying it exactly lately btw. Hey, it kinda showed today as Ricky got alot more carries than he has been getting. He is just more explosive. Period. He fits what we do better than Ronnie does.
