For those who feel violated by Alabama's attempt to harvest a good coach, they must look to the past and see examples of Miami's successes and attempts.
Louisiana State University lost a great coach a couple of years ago and back in 1969, the Dolphins offered Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant an unheard of offer to become the new Miami Dolphin Coach in 1979. $1.7 Million for 5 seasons must have made the "Bear" take a second look.

Whatever the outcome, The Phins will surface a winner. Not too many are sad about the Shula era instead of the Bryant era. If Saban stays it may be the Saban Era at Miami, but, it may be time for him to go...

The Bear would be in 1969....

NOT 1979 when Shula was here....it was Before Shula got here.

It was 1969 not 1979!

I went to the 1979 Sugar Bowl It was The last time Bear Bryant won a National Championship With Alabama!

COWHER - PFT just posted

COWHER TO "RESIGN" INSTEAD OF "RETIRE"?
There's some speculation in league and media circles that, when/if/when Steelers coach Bill Cowher calls it quits in the 'Burgh it might be a resignation instead of a retirement.
In other words, there's a school of thought that Cowher might quickly be enticed to take a job with another NFL team, if the price is right.
But since the Steelers hold his rights through the 2007 season, any new team that would be interested in hiring him also would be required to compensate the Steelers with draft picks.
An industry source has pointed to the Giants and the Falcons as teams with which Cowher could land.
Another name we're now hearing for Atlanta is former 49ers and Lions coach Steve Mariucci. If, however, Jim Mora couldn't get Mike Vick to perform in a West Coast offense, we can't imagine Mooch pulling it off, either.

Cowher should take the Alabama job. He'd get a good honeymoon couple of years, and he could then wait out his pick of pro jobs if he wanted to go back to doing that.

If you go back to Coach Bryant's autobiography ... which every Alabama fan should have in his or her library; it's out of print now which is a dirty shame, used hardback copies sell for a gi-normous price on Amazon, like $50, but you can still pick up used paperback copies pretty cheaply if you look hard enough ... he discusses this in detail.

It was during the time before the wishbone when things were going badly for Bama, and the way Coach Bryant talked about it in his book, you get the feeling he was kind of looking for a new challenge as well. In his book, he writes about a conversation with Joe Namath after the offer had been made. He asked Joe Willie, "Who's the best young quarterback in the league," and Joe Willie said, "Bob Griese." He asked Joe Willie, "Who's the best young running back in the league," and Joe Willie said, "Larry Csonka." Coach Bryant then said, "C'mere boy, I need to talk to you," told Joe Willie about the offer and Joe Willie said, "Shoot, coach, you can win with that bunch left-handed."

It got to the level, according to the book, of Coach Bryant telling the BOT and the university president that he was out the door, the BOT asked only that he "get us a good'un" as a replacement and even then they were thinking big, like Darrell Royal and John McKay. According to the book, it went so far as Coach Bryant talking to Coach McKay about coming to Bama, and Coach McKay wasn't interested, and about that time Coach Bryant started having second thoughts, and it didn't happen.

GM of the Dolphins.

Lives in NC and comes down to Miami twice a week during the offseason for meetings and on Sundays during the regular season.

The Dolphins look to tap into 30 years of Steeler's success by *finally* getting away from the Marino years that have just dragged on and petered out.

BTW, no compensation required to the Steelers if he is just GM/President as it's a promotion. If he took GM/Head Coach (which he would not want) then compensation would be required.
