We have needs on the offensive line right? Well, I think even though we really could use help on defense, that side of the ball was strong. My thought is that we shouldn't just go after 1 OL but 2. I think Steinbach is one we need, and then we should look at leonard davis as well. If we build a top notch offensive line our offense will succeed. Then CPEP can have all he time in the world and hit our receivers, who will catch the ball. Not to mention Ronnie Brown will run wild. Lets not just look to upgrade, lets make the most of having these FA out there. Lets get a couple of them. We can go without getting a top notch corner or OLB.

Well, if we could get those two, and thats a pretty big if, because we are cap strapped. We could adress corner, and OLB in the draft.
However, givin CPep more time, is not gonna make our recievers catch the ball. Thats on them using sound technique(SP?) and concentration.

It isnt about wanting alot of good players, its about having the money to do it, and not just some money more money than other teams who also have interest in these guys.

Yes, there are some teams with a whole lot more salary cap room than we have and they are gonna be shopping just like we are. The premium blue chip players, if you can call them that will probably be outside of our budget. We will be lucky to get one of the upper tier players and maybe one or two of the second tier players.

Steinbach or Dielman would be great especially if we get a rookie LT. He really helped Marcus McNeill make the transition to the pros and we can use a guy like that.

Steinbach played for the Bengals. I think you are thinking of Kris Dielman.

I think we can get Dielman.
OL is our top priority.

We are "not" cap strapped. So whoever says that just doesnt know the state of the miami dolphins. right now after we cut carter(clearing up $5.2mil), Harrington(clearing $2mil), Mckinney(clearing $3.5mil), and Anderson(clearing $1.5mil)...MIA will be $23mil under the cap. We are currently a little over $10mil under after the Holiday signing.

Not too mention we told James and Mare they need to restructure and Mcmichael, Taylor, Chambers, and Zach all can free up upwards of $10mil more...we can compete with every team who's name isnt the 49ers or those with $40mil of space.

We can potentially have $30mil of space. So we need to stop fictitiously commenting on being "cap strapped". And do some research before making such statements.

One of Dielman or Steinbach "will" be a Dolphin. So will Mughelli of BAL. Bank on that!

We won't get Dielman or Steinbach, and if we do get Leonard Davis, I would want to see him at G, not T. Unless Houck could turn him into the LT he was drafted to be.

You can't spend a ton of money on the offensive line. You have to reserve that for your playmakers. One high priced offensive lineman is passable. Two wouldn't be.

Many NFL coaches believe that the offensive line is the one area where you can take the Anthony Alabi's and Joe Toledo's of the world and mold them into very good players, i.e. it is an area that depends a bit less on natural ability and more on teaching than most of the other spots on your team. Therefore, you don't need to blow a lot of your salary cap there if you don't have to.

We might be able to afford or land Dielman or Steinbach, and if we did, drafting Levi Brown at #9 would make us solid for a long time. But if we don't draft Levi, having Dielman might just be what we need to give Anthony Alabi his shot at becoming a good LT working next to Dielman. Saban (hate him as I do, he has "some" knowledge) said Alabi was a star in the making, maybe he and one FA guard are all we need.

Excellent thread by the way, OL is what makes you win or lose games. Having a much better OL is what will make or break Daunte's return, or any other QB we put in there. 5 stars from me.

KFFL is reporting that we've put both Steinbach and Dielman at the top of our priorities list.

I actually think we could get Steinbach for cheap(or atleast compared to Dielman).

And after we sign our own RFA and UFA how much will we have left?

He also must see whether guard Kris Dielman and/or backup linebacker Carlos Polk leave. Both are expected to field offers from other teams.

There remains the possibility the Chargers make one more run at Dielman. However, the sides have not spoken in two months, and it does not look promising. Smith does not think the other guards available are as good as Dielman, so it is unlikely he will pay big money for a player such as the Bengals' Eric Steinbach. Regardless of what happens with Dielman, Smith is almost certainly going to sign an offensive lineman or two for depth.
