Stephen Ross is the real problem

So the man at the TOP bares no responsibility? And people here have the gall to laugh at owners like Jerry Jones, whose team has put together winners and dynasties in the modern era. But hey, we can keep living off the accomplishments of a long ago era.

The problem is that our front office sucks at evaluating talent, and then when it actually stumbles into some talent like a blind squirrel tripping over a nut, we don't bother to re-sign them, and instead throw money at free agents from other teams.

Here's a great example: Rishard Matthews. He was a Miami Dolphin who was drafted and then developed by the team for FOUR YEARS. Finally, in 2015, he had the chance to start (mostly by accident) and here's what happened when he was targeted:

2015: 61 targets, 43 receptions, 662 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception. Passer Rating: 121.1(!) - overall team passer rating was 88.9. When targeted, passing offense was 32.2 rating points better(!) than team average.

Then we let him walk to Tennessee, who signed him for a paltry 3 years, 15 million dollars. That's peanuts! That's nothing! And what has he done in 2 years in Tennessee? He's been good.

2016: 108 targets, 65 receptions, 945 yards, 9 touchdowns, 4 interceptions. Passer Rating: 101.0 - overall team passer rating was 93.7. When targeted, passing offense was 7.3 rating points better than team average.

2017: 68 targets, 41 receptions, 626 yards, 3 touchdowns, 4 interceptions. Passer Rating: 88.9 - overall team passer rating is 76.6. When targeted, passing offense is 12.3 rating points better than team average.

Instead of keeping players like Matthews on the roster, we have elected to trade draft picks for different receivers (Carroo and Stills) who have actually underperformed compared to the rest of our receiving group for the most part during their time in Miami. I like Kenny Stills, he's a great deep ball specialist, but it is inexcusable to have burned four draft picks plus a big chunk of cap space on a pair of receivers who aren't improving our offense by comparison to the guy who walked away for next to nothing.

So when I saw this this morning, I laughed:

Really? I get that perhaps he was not happy down here with Joe Philbin, but when he walked, Philbin had been fired. It should have been possible to work with him toward a fair contract extension. We didn't even try, because we wanted to showcase the guy we had just traded a 3rd round draft pick for, Kenny Stills.

He's certainly not the only one. We've had horrible struggles at cornerback, to the point that we had to go dredge up Byron Maxwell as a grossly overpaid starter in 2016, when we could have just tried to re-sign Nolan Carroll on a modest contract after he had shown that he was capable of being a serviceable NFL cornerback. Again, we develop players and then when they start to show that they are capable of being productive, decent players for us, we let them walk in order to blow more draft picks and money on unknown quantities or has-beens.

Jeff Ireland sucked. Dennis Hickey kind of sucked. Mike Tannenbaum...

The problem isn't Ross, the problem is the people Ross has put in charge of building the roster. They are ****ing stupid.

Oh man, you made so many great points but then you finished it up with this lol....do you know how ridiculous this statement is? Ross isn't the problem, it's everyone he hired? Everyone he took too long to sever ties with, everyone he gave extensions to? Newsflash, he's the ****ing owner of the team, he's ultimately responsible. 2013 was on him. He decided to keep Ireland after a 4th consecutive losing season when he could've fired him and had the top executives around the league begging for the job given the 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, $40M+ in cap space and a young potential franchise QB heading into year 2, basically the type of resources a new GM has wet dreams over...it was a great opportunity for someone to come in and truly rebuild the team to his liking in one offseason. Instead this big eared dumbass put his faith in that ugly Ginger **** and boy did we pay the price. That single decision set the team back years.

Philbin and Friends ruined this team. The offense and defense were mostly ineffective because Philbin wanted finesse weaklings rather than mean, nasty football players. The roster needed to be overhauled, and any candidates for the next regime after Philbin should want to run the opposite of what Philbin ran. Unfortunately, they hired Philbin 2.0 (Gase), and the team is still using most of Philbin's pathetic o-line, still running that short pass garbage offense, and the defense is still a dumpster fire. Now I have to wait for who knows how long until Ross finally gets tired of this mess and fires Gase, Tannenbaum, and the Front Office personnel.

This thread will be fun to bump again at the end of the year when this idiot gives Tannenbaum an extension to cap off a 6 win season.

It's like when your grandpa calls you up and tells you he's got great news, he just won the Nigerian lottery and it's on its way to him right now, he only had to send 500 dollars for shipping and handling, and he wants to take the family out to a nice restaurant to celebrate.

Really?

*makes jerking off motion*

We're still suffering from his many blunders... is there another owner in the league who's made as many mistakes?

Kept Sparano too long...

Flew across the country to woo a guy for his team's head coach position that wasn't even vacant, basically cutting Sparano's legs out from under him and dooming that season before it even started. Foolishly thought his act wouldn't be national news....

Hired a terrible coach in Philbin, kept him too long....

Kept Ireland way too long, let him keep his job after a fourth consecutive losing season, setting up the historically bad 2013 offseason where The Ginger wasted 5 picks in the first 3 rounds and $40+ million in cap space.....

Didn't even have the guts to fire Ireland completely, instead offering him a demotion that actually came with a raise lol... thankfully he said no and resigned.....

Followed that up by running a complete debacle of a GM search where he settled on the 5th option, an Asst GM that was on the verge of being fired in Tampa Bay but got the job here because he was the only candidate content with having no authority over Philbin...he only lasted 2 years.

Somehow let Mike ****ing Tannenbaum convince him to let him run a team again.

Obviously he's done some good but this resume is awful, it takes years to recover from all these terrible decisions. Time to point the finger at the man who's really to blame.
good god, you just like to complain. He paid for the stadium renovation and is otherwise staying away from football operations. Sometimes I wonder why some people in this board are even dolphins fans.

How do you know that it was Kraft who built the winning culture and not Belichick or Brady?

Because the winning culture started even before Belichick and Brady got there. I do remember them going to the Super Bowl with Bledsoe at QB.

Just because Ross paid for the stadium renovation himself doesn't make him a good owner. He is responsible for hiring the football people last time I checked. He has never hired the right people since he has owned the team. Period!

Tim Tebow Day

I love all the home games given up to London and pleading to have less home games in September/October. Awesome Owner.

When Ross brings in buffoons like Tannenbaum, then he's a major part of the problem.

I have to agree on the Tannenbum hire...I mean the guy was a TOTAL failure at his last job but gets the green light here? I dont get that logic...Who here would interview many good people for their company but hire the guy who was just the conductor of a train wreck operation?

Ross is no peach...He has not turned anything around in S Fla but people still defend him like he has the pedigree of Krafty.
You know what? Just win Baby and until then you are a complete fail

He only paid for it because the city denied his request for taxpayer funding. He wanted to throttle those people just like the Marlins did. And he bitched about it.

It's not like he was going to share the profits from his newly remodeled stadium with the poor people he was trying to make pay for it. It's ****ed up owners are allowed to do that to people and it's weird that they receive praise for failed extortion.

Ross has been a bumbling mess of an owner. The team is in a constant state of dysfunction and hasn't won anything meaningful since he's been making decisions. All you really need to know.

I'm not going to say Ross is the "real" problem or all the problem. But he is responsible for Tannebaum and Gase. Jury still out on Gase for sure. MT eh...not as much IMO.

Mr. Ross also held onto Mr Philbin too long and Jeff Ireland. He kind of bungled all that didn't he. And of course Harbaugh....

Ross is all about the half measure. Not a lot of confidence that he rights the ship all at once. We'll always have a rudder broken or a hole in a sail.

to please that all on one person is very short sighted.

The worst offseason in the history of the franchise is on Ross. Everyone was calling for Ireland's head that offseason, could've changed the course of the team's history by making a change at that moment in time.
