Steve Slaton - RB - Dolphins

Steve Slaton got "a lot" of work with the first-team offense, along with Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas, as the Dolphins opened training camp Friday.

Slaton emerged as a coaching-staff favorite during offseason practices, and it appears they are serious about giving him a shot at playing time. Rookie Lamar Miller also stood out on Friday. As crowded as this backfield is, Slaton remains an extreme long shot to make an early-season fantasy impact.

In the back of my mind I think Slaton is going to be trade bait at the end of the preseason. I think the Dolphins will keep Bush, Thomas, Miller and Messam at running back and ship Slaton out for a late round pick. Just my gut feeling.

Shame...He seems to have all the right numbers to be a primary back. He usually stood out when I watched him play at W. Virginia; I see nothing in D.Thomas, Nothing!

I'm not so sure about that, lets remember back in 2008 he had 1,282 yards rushing and 9TD, he came on strong at the end of the season last year and had some nice runs, he fits the WC offense perfect as that slash type RB that can catch passes out of the backfield, but I do agree with you the backfield might be a little crowded but the one guy who has to step up is thomas because if he doesnt then I can see messam being used as the short yardage goal-line back and bush, slaton, and miller being rotated and used in the slot and catching passes too, so I think this all depends on what Thomas does.

I like Slaton, but Bush and Miller can do what he does and in a pass happy league, we don't need three "speed" backs.

I agree, he's outta here.

I have always like the way Slayton runs, so I am not surprised. DT has not impressed me since we drafted him.
I can visualize Bush and Slayton starting, with Miller coming in on third downs.
DT will get a few carries and play special teams. I have not given up on DT, but his odds are getting longer with the different scheme and the addition of Miller.
Just my .02

Is Messam even practicing? I haven't seen any tweets mentioning him. I know he was injured, but I thought I read that Jonas Gray was the only Dolphin not practicing due to injury. Has anyone seen anything on how he looks?

Not likely but possible we carry 4 backs. Charles Clay can play multiple roles, which allows the flexibility not to carry a FB. Good problem to have.

I was at practice this morning, and I thought Messam had a few nice runs, albeit on the 2nd team offense.
I was there this morning and have to agree with you. He looked smooth and quick for abig dude. Not sure how he fits into the mix but for the 1st time seeing him, he looked pretty good!!!
