  • [h=4]Players love working for Bengals' Zimmer[/h]Few people are more deserving than Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. He clearly has been one of the better defensive coordinators in the NFL for years. He’s also the type of coach that players love playing for. I can’t tell you the number of players who credit Zimmer for their individual and team success. In fact, Houston cornerback Jonathan Joseph, who spent most of his career with the Bengals, told me that Zimmer changed the outlook of players more than anyone with the franchise. He shoots straight and is honest with players.

Some teams have stayed away because Zimmer is considered a little rough around the edges, but so what? With his experience and relationships, he would be able to put together a crack staff and develop players. He’s due a shot.
Tell me this doesn't sound like a perfect guy to right this organization? Hire this man!

well, were going to interview him. so lets go! I am all for taking the time to get the right guy. I like interviewing multiple poeple for once, we never did it that way here and always took the first guy whether it be JJ, his recommendation in Wanny, Saban. ect.

The only time we took a little more time was Cam Cameron but not really that much.

OK here is a genuine question / concern

Most successful head coaches who ex-coordinators only seem to spend 3-5 seasons before they get a head coaching job. I guess their potential shines through and they have that ambition whereas those guys who are naturally suited to being coordinators stick with that

Zimmer has been a DC for over 10 years so what has stopped him becoming a head coach previously ?

Sounds like Sparano except for coming from a defensive background

Exactly how does that sound like Sparano? Tony Sparano is probably the most unsure of himself head coach I have ever seen. It's almost like he would tell you what he believes, but the way he comes across, you aren't convinced that he actually believes in it. That stuff gets picked up on by the players, and I think you can tell that this team's players are very unsure of themselves in crunch time.

Mike Zimmer is a very confident coach who knows what he is trying to accomplish. Another difference is that Zimmer is a tremendous coach schematically. He can game plan with the best of them, which was clearly a weakness on Tony Sparano's part.

Sounded like Sparano because it was all about how the players reportedly loved working for him and I was getting deja vu

I like the things I've seen about Zimmer. When players like playing for someone who will deal with them when it needs to be done says alot. His straight-forwardness may also serve him well in dealing with someone like Ross, Ireland and even Peterson, who I contend is more involved than that of just an advisor. We all know about Ross and Ireland, but Peterson has always been known to be hard to work for or with in his past.

Just a lazy comparison of Sparano and Zimmer....

Take a look at the Bengals depth chart and tell me if any of those guys would start for the Fins. Yet he got a ton out of them. Don't give me that they did not play anyone blah blah. He played whoever was on the sked and had a top 10 D....

Why hasn't he been a HC already? Well, many though he had the Nebraska job sewn up in 05, but fell through. In terms of the NFL, MANY people say he just has not been given the shot. Maybe his time is now?

Take a look at this depth chart and tell me he did not get chick salad out of chicken....

Another thing I like about Zimmer is he will be able to put a great staff together from his connections and the respect people have for him.

Phibin is only 5 years younger than Zimmer.

Would love to see Zimmer get a serious look. I see a lot of Bengals games and I think he'd be a great candidate

That's a bigger key to this than many may feel. Take a guy like Rob Chudzinski. He's considered to be an up and coming coach in the league, but right now, he's not very experienced as far as being in the league and with his connections. If Rob gets a head coaching job now, can he fill out the staff with quality assistants? That may have been what hurt Tony Sparano more than anything - his inability to hire a quality staff without Parcells's help.
