My brother-in-law lives in Provo, Utah. He said LaVell Edwards, who coached BYU for an eternity, said John Beck is, in his opinion, a mirror image of Steve Young, and will be, in his opinion, as good an NFL Qb as Young was. So, I compared their stats (both only played 2 full seasons as BYU's Qb.) ----------interesting comparisons.......

Steve Young's stats, his 2 complete seasons:

1982- 367 attempts - 230 comp - 3100 yards - 18 tds, 18 int.
1983- 429 attempts - 306 comp - 3902 yards - 33 tds, 10 int.

total 796 attempts- 536 comp - 7002 yards - 51 tds, 28 int.

John Beck's stats, his 2 complete seasons:

2005- 513 attempts - 331 comp - 3709 yards - 27 tds, 13 int.
2006- 417 attempts - 289 comp - 3885 yards - 32 tds, 8 int.

total 930 attempts - 620 comp- 7594 yards - 59 tds, 21 int.

Everyone has their own opinion, but no one knew Young's talent in college like LaVell Edwards, and for him to give Beck that kind of endorsement, speaks pretty highly of him.

Again, one man's opinion...

Thats pretty interesting. Not long after reading your post, I went to you tube to see if there were any videos of him. One video I saw he threw a 70 yard bomb, talk about cannon for an arm! DRAFT BECK!!

Saturday and Sunday are huge!

What you're saying is spot on! There is so much talent out there i this draft and we are sitting in a fantastic position!

Damn right there's a Steve Young or a Brady or a Jason Taylor or a Zach Thomas...

I have to believe that Meuller is in a position to prove himself in a big way.

And personally I believe he/we are primed to do something big and beautiful!

I hope we trade down and accumulate more picks.

The Dolphins need alot and this Saturday and Sunday needs to be a big day! Time to start walking in the right direction. C'mon Meuller do us all proud...

Thanks for the post.

It sounds to me like LaVell Edwards is being kind to the QB of his former school by endorsing him just as he enters the NFL draft. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather judge prospects by their performance... and Beck's performance on the field has been pretty impressive. What little film I've seen of him, he has outstanding touch on his passes, very good accuracy in traffic, and about as tight and quick a release as anyone else in the draft. He also looks like he has a great "pocket sense"... feeling the rush around him, and moving around the pocket to avoid pressure. He also runs very well. As you pointed out, his stats aren't just good... they make your ears perk up.

The only faults I can see in him is that he doesn't seem to me to play with great urgency... which could be apprehension on his part, or just him being so good he makes it look easy... and he tends to sidearm the ball a lot through traffic... which again, could be a bad habit, or terrific technique for a 6'2" QB to get the ball past big linemen.

I do like him, though. He's a project, but I wouldn't mind it one bit if he winds up a Dolphin in the late second or third.

One thing for sure... he's a smart, accomplished, high character guy.

RAMS WANT BECK?
There are rumors making the rounds that the St. Louis Rams have contacted teams at the bottom of round one regarding the possibility of getting a chance to pick BYU quarterback John Beck before the Lions use their second-round draft selection.
The Rams most likely wouldn't be trading down from the No. 13 spot; they'd be trading up from their spot in round two, where they hold the 20th (No. 52 overall) pick.
Marc Bulger currently is the starting quarterback in St. Louis, but he was signed by a prior regime. And Bulger is under contract only through 2007, at a salary of $3.95 million. If the Rams believed Bulger to be the long-term answer, wouldn't they have extended him by now?
Hey, Rams -- why not offer Bulger and the No. 13 overall pick to the Lions and move up to No. 2? Then St. Louis can get either JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn.
If they even would want them. The Rams could be one of the teams who view guys like John Beck as better than Russell or Quinn.

I was hoping to get Beck in the 2nd if we didn't get Quinn in the first, but he could be gone also..

his name is coming up in everything, they were talking about him on Sirius radio today and a GM mentioned he was really moving up a lot of teams draft boards, so I imagine he will go in the late first round. Doubt we will have a chance to land him, unless we end up trading down with someone, which I don't see happening.

I recently have been doing homewrk on Beck myself. I like what I see but Any of these q-backs can be busts and they can all be great. I would prefer beck unless we picked quinn at #9. Check my Mock draft below in my sig.

i like this thread becaus ei love john beck. but miami will take quinn if he is there within reach whether it is 6 or 9. i think beck could be really good in miami. search his name at youtube.com. he has some good highlights. i didnt realize how close his stats were to youngs. i would love to see beck have a career like youngs except with all the concusions.

same here

I didn't know much about Beck untill I saw his highlight videos on YouTube. He looked really good compared to some of the other second tier candidates such as Stanton and others. He seems to be very accurate, puts a lot of zip on the ball, quick release and he can pass the ball straight from the shoulder or sidearm if necessary. He has a strong arm also as a lot of people here on finheaven put a lot of stock in the long passers.

The guy has an arm I will grant you that but he can't run like Steve Young so there really is no comparison. I think the comparison is really more like Brady in his runnig abiity but as to the rest of his ability he ain't no Brady, he is more like Bledsoe.

So he runs like Brady and throws like Bledsoe, now that ain't bad.

I would be very happy if we could manage to get Beck in the second but if we have to pakage both second round picks to move up to get Beck then
I would have to think long and hard about losing a second rounder in this
draft that is full of decent talent to aquire ONE player.
