DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — When Joe Philbin says he has a sense of humor, he's not joking.

The Miami Dolphins coach has been described as a staid, stoic straight arrow. He's also meticulous and circumspect, known to pick up the stray piece of trash or read his postgame victory speech from note cards.

With characteristic conciseness, he says he's bland. But ask Philbin's players about his humor, and they laugh.

"I absolutely love it," receiver Greg Jennings says. "Not everybody is in sync with it. Sometimes it flies by you, and you don't catch onto it, and he's looking at you like, 'It was a joke, guys.' You don't really expect him to come off like that."

Jennings has known Philbin since 2006, when both were with Green Bay. If Dolphins fans have rarely seen evidence of the coach's wit, it may be because there's little to laugh about lately.

The Dolphins have gone 7-9, 8-8 and 8-8 in three years under Philbin. Add a bullying scandal and a pair of late-season collapses, and it makes for a gloomy mood at times.

Training camp invites optimism, however. The Dolphins are confident they'll end a seven-year playoff drought, and Philbin has cracked an occasional smile during the first 10 days of training camp.

He drew laughs Monday with a playful jab at Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes.

"He's a good athlete," Philbin says. "Just ask him. He'll tell you."

Same thing happen to Tom Coughlin with the Giants. First three years he was a bore and they had no playoff success and a 25-25 record.
In his fourth year he lightened up and the Giants won the Super Bowl. It worked once already. Can't hurt.

He was not 25-25 he was 25-23 and he made the playoffs two of his first three years, that's nowhere near the same as no playoffs in three years and no winning record ever.

I remember stories similar to this last year about this time, e.g., Joe getting funky at the team banquet. Joe's chemistry with the players kind of went downhill after that. Hopefully he has a roster he can stay in tune with this year.

I love how the article says ask the players and then it refers to Greg Jennings. Lol Jennings loves him from Green Bay and is probably the only one.

He has a dry sense of humor and that's awesome! He's really doing a better job and I believe he surprises many this year. He's growing just like the younger players are!

It's probably a win-win season for the haters - they either eat crow if the team massively succeeds, or he fails and they get their wish of his departure.

Really the worst case scenario is stumbling into the playoffs and then getting stomped in the wildcard. You would think that might be enough to keep his job...but I don't think it will. I don't think he stays with a 9-7 record and a playoff loss. I think he has to win the division or get a playoff win to keep his job. And if he succeeds at that, we should feel pretty good about the future.

Not to defend Philbin, but how much has the death of his son caused him to not open up and how much of a bad front office with Ireland contributed also?
Despite Hickey being here last year, I think Tannenbaum may have created an environment and the personnel to make any stoic HC, open up. I like the Jennings role here, and that familiarity can open him up a little more. I want to see him do the Whip/Nae Nae. lol

That's why being a 'hater' is easy. It's always win-win... Either you're right and get to say 'I told you so' or you're wrong and all is well anyway because the team succeeds.

25-23 with 2 playoff losses is 25-25 and no playoff success. Nitpick away.

One of their playoff seasons was the same as our 8-8 last year. Hard to give them credit for a bad division.
