There's been A LOT of talk about how challenging, how arduous the Miami Dolphins' 2009 schedule is.
So much talk that Tony Sparano has even pointed out how fierce it is on paper, and educated his team that few division champs (.486 percent of division winners the past 10 years) return to the playoffs the very next season.
The schedule is fierce... on paper. It's the toughest in the NFL (.594) based on last year's win-loss totals.
No one in South Florida complained when the Dolphins played New England without Tom Brady twice last season, or when Seattle started Seneca Wallace instead of Matt Hasselbeck. Or when the Dolphins played the Rams with Orlando Pace and Steven Jackson nursing serious injuries, or J.P. Losman and not Trent Edwards was starting for the Bills in their second meeting.
Also in Miami's favor is the fact the Dolphins only go west once (to San Diego). Last year Miami went west twice.
The Dolphins also play all four of it's exhibition season opponents (Jacksonville, Carolina, Tampa Bay, and New Orleans) in the regular season, which will help the coaches from a preparation standpoint. Sure it'll help the opposition too, but I wouldn't trade Sparano's staff (with a little Bill Parcells assistance) for any of those four teams.
So, after hearing my argument, does the schedule still concern you? Is it still the Goliath that will keep the Dolphins from returning to the post season?
