There is an old adage in sports, you can’t make the club, when you’re sitting in the tub. Nuff said!

Sturgis has spent parts of the last two seasons on the sidelines with various injuries which required the team to bring in temporary kickers. Now, the team is going to have to go through the balance of OTAs without him as he suffered a quadricep injury that will sideline the kicker for some time. Sturgis has made less than 80% of his attempts in his two seasons with the Dolphins and the thought is the Dolphins are growing weary of his inconsistency.

Enter rookie free agent Andrew Franks. Franks comes to Miami as an undrafted free agent from Division III powerhouse Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. “They actually called me around the sixth round and said if you’re not drafted, there is an opportunity for you in our organization,’’ Franks said to The Monterey Herald after the draft. “Around the seventh round, my agent called and said what teams do we want to look into?’’ Franks said. “The Dolphins were at the top of my list. I’ve kept in contact with their special-teams coordinator.’ I love this kid already.

Yeah he's going to lose the kicking job to a kicker who was what in college, like 37 for 56 in FGs? I don't think so. Franks is a lot more erratic than Sturgis and has shown that in OTAs also. He'll make a FG then shank one, make another, then shank another.

Not so sure it will be Franks who ultimately gets the job, I think Miami picks up a veteran kicker at some point.

Guess Miami will just have to scores TDs all the time and not settle for any FGs anymore. Also no more XPs just go for 2 all the time.

Best of luck, Franks. Here's to your future as a Miami Dolphin. :brewskis:

I don't care who kicks for us as long as it isn't kickball. The guy blows. Worst FG % accuracy over past two years. What have we to lose taking a flyer on someone else or bringing in a veteran who at least will make all the kicks inside of 40.

Many readers may not be aware of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2012, RPI was ranked as the 4th best engineering school in the world by Business Insider.
Our need is for a good reliable kicker. However, don't be surprised if Franks is also extremely intelligent. He's a biomedical engineering graduate who made the Dean's list.

Benefits of undergraduate community at Rensselaer: "The experiences you have with influential people." - October 2014

Senior Reflection: "I would like to honor Joe Vrablic for our senior day. Joe has always gone out of his way to help me improve as an athlete here at RPI. He has helped me clear the field on snowy days, gotten any gear that I need as a kicker and on too many times to count, picked up footballs off of the ECAV roof that I kicked up there. Joe has always supported me and has been instrumental in my success on the football field." - March 2015

37 made FG's
19 missed FG's

66% is not exactly what I had in mind as an improvement.

Just a little tidbit of info. As I've previously said in other posts, I'm rooting hard for Franks, as I live right down the road from RPI. I can tell you they have one of the WORST fields I've ever seen on a college level. Not sure how much of an impact that had on his accuracy, but there has to be a reason multiple teams were interested in him pre-draft

Yeah he's going to lose the kicking job to a kicker who was what in college, like 37 for 56 in FGs? I don't think so. Franks is a lot more erratic than Sturgis and has shown that in OTAs also. He'll make a FG then shank one, make another, then shank another.

He'll lose the job to someone. It's inevitable.

Franks would need to progress drastically overnight to have a chance....I just don't see him as the solution. He was more of a guy brought in to push Caleb a bit. Find me a serviceable vet.

To be fair to the kid, who knows what kind of coaching he was getting at this school. It's more than possible that he can greatly improve his accuracy with NFL specialists working with him. He does have a strong leg. Still a long-shot of course.

I believe a Vet will ne brought in, but Franks will have all the chances in the world to win the job. If he works hard, knowing there is actually a job up for grabs, it is possible.

He has a powerful leg, but is inconsistent, sometimes all it takes is a tweak here and there, with some work, and his accuracy and consistency could change dramatically, but he will have to work very hard to have any type chance...no vacation for him, if he actually does want the job.

The organization is already working on getting some competition in, one way or the other Miami will get at worse a manageable kicker, now Franks has to ask himself how much he wants this, because I am sure the coaching in College he got, was not up to par with most other schools.
