The Sunday buzz column, with lots of Dolphins, Canes, Marlins and Heat, is below.
First, a 7:30 p.m. and then a 10:45 p.m. update with Dolphins post-draft signings:
The Dolphins, who did not select any linebackers in the draft, have signed four highly productive ones in the first hour after the draft: Penn State OLB Mike Hull (a third team All-American last season with 140 tackles, one pick and two sacks); Utah State inside linebacker Zach Vigil (154 tackles, 9 sacks last season); Cincinnati inside linebacker Jeff Luc (133 tackles, 6.5 sacks) and Marshall inside linebacker Neville Hewitt (123 tackles, 4.5 sacks, one pick).
The Dolphins had shown a lot of interest in Vigil and Hewitt throughout the process, as we noted earlier this week. Vigil is listed at 6-2, 240; Hull at 6-0, 231; Luc at 6-1, 256; and Hewitt at 6-1 and 231.
Other players added by the Dolphins tonight (with a caveat that while at least a couple of the names below have signed, others of these players might be just be coming in for tryouts this week, which won't be clarified until the Dolphins formally announce the names in a few days):
### Georgia defensive end Ray Drew. Had just 39 tackles, one sack last season but CBS' Rob Rang said his "relatively pedestrian statistics can be explained by the block-eating role he was asked to play at Georgia. He quietly emerged as one of the SEC's better and more versatile defenders."
### Tennessee punter Matt Darr. (Unlikely to unseat Brandon Fields.)
### RPI kicker Andrew Franks. Excels at kickoffs; special teams coach Darren Rizzi flew to New York to work him out two weeks ago. Caleb Sturgis already had one serious challenger: former Arkansas kicker Zach Hocker, the Redskins' 7th-rounder last season.
### Maine receiver Damarr Aultman. Had 48 catches for 498 yards last season.
### Illinois State offensive lineman Michael Liedtke. Played left tackle last season but well suited for guard.
### Tim Semisch, a 6-7 tight end from Northern Illinois, will try out for the Dolphins this week. He had just 10 career receptions for 100 yards.
### Bowling Green defensive end Kendall Montgomery. The Miami Pace High alum had two sacks last season. His agent said it's a contract, not a tryout.
### Alabama receiver Christion Jones. He had 19 catches and 264 yards last season after catching 34 the previous year. He averaged 23 yards on kickoff returns last season after scoring touchdowns on kickoff returns of 90-plus yards each of the previous two years.
### UCLA defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy. The 6-5, 330-pound tackle had three sacks last season.
### USC G/T Aundrey Walker. NFL.com's assessment: "Despite a promising start to his career, Walker has faded into irrelevance over the last two seasons and was a rotational player in 2014. His lack of functional strength and footwork might doom his draft chances."
### Kansas receiver Nigel King. Caught 30 passes for 537 yards, a 17.9 average last season. King has good size at 6-3.
### TCU 6-0 receiver David Porter. Caught 39 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns last season. He's coming in for a tryout with the Dolphins.
### Arizona offensive tackle Mickey Baucas. Started at left tackle and "boasts an intriguing build with great height and long arms," CBS' Rob Rang said. #

4 ilbs signed as udfas...no way anyone can tell me mike lb was not a priority in the draft...no way

Well they clearly told the media they were digging deep for ILB. Thats when I intruduced myself to Luc.

Perfectly played by the Dolphins. I had Vigil and Hull as LB's worth drafting. Hull has good instincts and feet in pass coverage, and he fills very well in the run game. He's surprisingly good in short-yardage situations. I had/have him as a better all around player than Perryman. He's smart, strong, quick, and fast enough.

It was. Obvious need. Have to hope our Comanche scouts got it covered bro -- that and we never try to solve all our issues in any one draft because -- what would the scouts do after that? Gotta maintain a constant need for employment!

That said, these cubic zirconias in the rough look interesting -- but then again everyone does on their highlight video. But maybe we get lucky and land a football machine who can man the middle and thump as necessary.

The Kendricks thing still bothers me, really need to move on I suppose at this point. I really wanted Gurley also and on top of that Kendrick's had slid so close to us but like most of us thought we would have needed to make a move up to get him.

Who do you think out the UDFA has the best chance of making the team?

Do you think we should have tried to move up for Kendrick's?

Lucs junior tape is lousy...senior tape is better but he runs himself into blocks...not an ounce of inside presnap read and diag...has range can run and he will strike you but inside run d unless you come to him hes so late to see it he gets blocked on repeat running himself into blocks even and giving up big plays...shows a little bit of awareness in zone coverage etc but that inside run game d does nothing for me...

Not what im looking for

2 of these guys probably have a great shot of making this roster...one for specials and one maybe to start at mike for 2 downs at least...lucs best shot is specials imo...

Hull...possible starter at mike...difference maker though i doubt it...but he looks like the one if any id say...havent seen the vigil kids stuff or nevilles though...its not luc for actual lb play

No. I had 1-tech as a bigger need than MLB, and I like Phillips better than Kendricks as a prospect - assuming Phillips' back is OK. I said it before, but the Dolphins had to find a DT to compliment Suh. Earl Mitchell would have greatly minimized Suh's impact on this team. With Phillips, you're putting the offense in a tough situation. You're not going to move Phillips off the ball with one player, and you're not going to block Suh with one player. The run D should much, much better than last season.

Kendricks is a nice player, but he was never going to maximize Suh. If you don't put Suh next to big, stout DT, you're wasting him to some extent. You're not freeing him up to be a disruptive force as often as you would be with 330 LB 1-technique. Aaron Donald works so well in St. Louis, because he plays next to Michael Brockers, who is his perfect compliment. You want Suh as an attacking 3-technique, where he's completely dominant. If Earl Mitchell is your DT, that's no dice. You need Suh to pick up too much slack, and he'd be double teamed on every down. If this works as designed, Phillips will free up Suh to have the best statistical seasons of his career. He's never played with a guy as big and talented as Phillips. The back is the only concern. Kendricks was never going to do all that for Suh. I like Kendricks, but you have to prioritize your investments. Once the team invested all that money in Suh, I started screaming for a new 1-technique. Suh gives you the ability to quickly build a dominant unit. If Phillips hits, Miami will have a top-tier D-line for a long time.

I'm still surprised that kevin white from TCU isn't a part of our plans at all. We brought him in for a visit then passed on him like 5 times, then he went undrafted and we passed on him again? Maybe we'll see him brought in later. Just surprised that one of our visits has been sitting there for free and seemingly no interest.

I like Penn State defensive players. They had a seriously tough defense last year that got little to no love across the nation. Wasn't Wake a Penn st guy? The bills had a good one in paul posclucksy or whatever. I think he's with Jax now. Penn state usually has tough hard nosed type lb's. Hull would be worth a workout for sure.
