Amare Stoudemire, who jumped from high school to stardom in the NBA, signed a five-year contract extension Monday with the Phoenix Suns worth about $73 million.

The deal is the maximum allowed under the NBA collective bargaining agreement. The exact figures won't be known until next year's salary cap is set, Suns president Bryan Colangelo said.

The extension kicks in after this season and has an opt-out clause after the 2009-10 season.

"What I've achieved now is something that I always figured I would as a kid," Stoudemire said. "I've had that type of determination since I was a youngster playing around the playgrounds, getting dirty after school."

Well deserved, he's one of the three best young players in the game (with Wade and Lebron). Shaq said if he could have any player in the NBA it would be Amare. Even though I don't think the Suns are going to be as good as they were last year, Amare will be and they will be a top 5 team in the West (I don't think their the best regular season wise like they were last year)!

He added a 3 point jumper during the offseason. Many people expect to avg 30.0 ppg this season!

Ugh, that's the WORST thing that could happen! A 3 point jumper, I mean, not averaging 30.

Way too many players fall in love with their jump shot and forget the skills that make them special. Stoudemire is an absolutely unstoppable force inside. He may be the best low post scorer and offensive rebounder in the NBA. It's almost certainly him, Duncan or Shaq. If I was Mike D'Antoni, I'd have an electronic tracking device around Amare's ankle that gives him an electric shock when he strays farther than 12 feet from the hoop.
