*** SUPER BOWL LI GAME THREAD - NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS vs ATLANTA FALCONS ***

First Super Bowl I haven't watched in 20 years and it was an entertaining one...

Oh well on to Champions League....

gehen wir Bayern!

Play calling was atrocious but how does Ryan take a sack there? He saw the guy coming and laid down anyway. Once you're out of field goal range the game is over. The ball in Brady's hands with a chance to win the game? Please. I stopped watching after that. Inexcusable. On him (although Alex Mack had one of the worst games I've ever seen) IMO. I hope he never gets back because of it. You gave another SB to the pats. Get ****ed.

Only the lefties' pain could make a Cheatriot SB victory tolerable. Not tired of winning!

Since the mid-season departure of LB Collins the Patriots have often used a 3-3 Bear front. It had NT over the Center and the two DE's typically shaded on the inside of the Tackles (5 tech). MLB behind the NT 4-6 yards off LOS and the two OLB's flanking the tackles or over the TE then the luxury of 5 DB's.

They threw in a new wrinkle for the SB.

Pats NT Branch would line up in the 0 tech just a few feet off of the LOS, not over the ball as usual. Since the Falcons primarily run the Shanahan standard ZBS, it forced the Center to come out to him and ran the DE's and OLB's underneath w/ twists and slants. The two gap play by they NT there also at times cut off some of the paths of the Guards trying to reach the 2nd level to carry out their blocking assignments.

All Belichick and Atlanta choking. Name one good play Brady made all game. It was all short crap that they ran for more yardage.

Either you slept thru the 2nd half or you're just a hater. Brady made several BRILLIANT throws on 3rd and 4th down in the 4th to keep the chains moving.

As for the big plays he HAD to make to score in the 4th:

Brady faced six plays that would either kill a drive or keep it alive: one fourth down and five third downs.

He took a sack on one of them, keeping the Patriots in line for a field goal rather than risking an interception. On the other five, Brady passed for 17 yards on fourth and three; ran for 15 yards on third and eight; passed for 25 yards on third and one; passed for 12 yards on third and 11; and passed for 16 yards on third and 10 from his own 9-yard line.

On those five conversions, he scrambled once and passed to five different receivers for first downs. In the most crucial moments of the game, over and over, Brady diagnosed what he needed to do and had the nerve and skill to do it.

Atlanta zoo welcomes baby ****roach 'Tom Brady'

The Atlanta zoo and the Roger Williams Park Carousel Village in Rhode Island had agreed the losing side would name a baby animal after the winning team’s star quarterback.

Meet baby Madagascar hissing ****roach "Tom Brady",

Holding Atlanta to 1 for 8 on 3rd down is impressive. But Atlanta only had the ball for 23 mins 27 seconds. They ran for 104 yards on 18 carries (5.7 ypc) and Ryan was 17 for 23 for 284 yards and 2 TDs. NE's defense was hardly impressive in this game outside of the 3rd down defense.

:bobdole: What a reach. Holy ****.

Out of 10 drives (omitting the the :02 second possession to end the 1st half) Atlanta never had a drive of more than 8 plays and had a mere 46 total. We're talking about the season's #1 offense being held to an average of 4.6 plays a drive and 13 pts under their scoring average. That's phenomenal defense. You can't spin it otherwise without adding ignorance to the opposing argument.

To be fair, New England could play like absolute dog **** and you'd still find a way to defend them.

They were held to that many first downs because New England was playing keep away with the ball. While NE defense played very well it would have given up a lot more yards and points had the offense not racked up over 90 plays by controlling the game on offense.

Every possession, for both teams. obviously mattered greatly as it came down to the wire in regulation and then OT. NE did a phenomenal job on offense controlling the ball and their defense was just as exceptional in getting off the field and shutting down the Falcon's O when they had to.

It's funneled to just talking about the SB, but I'm not arguing one single game for the "defense wins championships", they did it all season long. 15 out of 19 games, including all 3 playoff games, they held their opponents to 21 pts or less.

Yep they were definitively the best defense in the NFL this season and that contributed greatly to their ability to win the championship.
