Maybe this has been mentioned before, but when talk of our wide receivers comes up, it seems that many people would like to see David Sutton make the roster. I think Chambers, Booker, Hagan, Az-Hakim, Ginn and maybe even Campbell make it at WR. With that being said, why not make Sutton a hybrid TE, like Gates was for Cameron before? He has the size, speed and hands, and after Martin we really have no significant depth at TE, so why not? Any thoughts out there about this?

I would like to see him make the squad, at WR or TE, just because I feel his size could be very valuable.

He's very raw, so learning TE would probably be the same as learning WR. His size would be a serious advantage in the end zone on jump balls but that's all he brings to the table right now, he has practically no experience whatsoever.

Sutton's only 222 pounds. Far too small for a TE these days. Going to TE would require weight gain, which he may or not be able to comfortably do. And even so, it would likely affect that alleged 4.35 speed.

If you look at Cameron's squads in SD, he always seemed to have one or two WRs of this build. Kassim Osgood, Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd....all at least 6-5, 220. Sutton seems like another.

As for backup TEs, he's got familiarity with Justin Peelle.

It is possible. We don't really have a solid third tight end, so Sutton could be a good red zone target. Just chuck it up and let him outjump the corners.

Guess I forgot about J. Peelle when I wrote that, but even with Peelle and Martin, our other TE's don't scare anybody, so why not Sutton as the 3rd TE. It's nice to debate who will make the team, that just means we actually might have some talent this year competing for the jobs!

He would have to put on 20 or 30 pounds without losing much speed which would be extremely hard at his frame IMO.

Well, your third TE generally doesn't see much time outside of special teams and goalline situations.....when he's even active on gameday. Sometimes teams only roster 2 TEs anyway. Not to say you shouldn't try and make every position better. But it's probably not worth the trouble/risk of turing a potential player at WR into a project at TE.

Again, Cameron has a history with WRs like Sutton.

Put on the weight and stick him in at TE. I had taught about this lat month during OTA, why not make this guy gain 20 pounds and stick him at TE. Our own David Martin use to be a WR.

Then what happens when he goes from running a 4.3 to a 4.8 or higher?

His frame is all muscle, I have never seen a player ripped more than he is. There isn't very much room to add weight without slowing him down.

It's true about Cameron liking these big receivers, so maybe he sticks as WR. To be honest with you, as much as we value the speed of Az-Hakim and Campbell, these guys haven't really made an impact for a team in years. With their best years behind them maybe Cameron goes with young talent like Sutton and even P.K. Sam.

Why? He's been kicking butt in mini-camps at WR.

Things could certainly change when the pads come on. But wouldn't you want to wait and see first?

He's a got a huge physical advantage at WR, where he's used to playing. At unfamiliar TE, even is able to add 30 pounds, which would take at least a year.....he's just another guy.

Again, why turn immediate potential into a long-term project?

Something that we both can agree on is that Stuttob is defitnetly a project and it will be interesting to see Cam does with him. If he ran a 4.3 at his frame that is very impressive, the guy is our tallest reciever.

Good to know about his frame.

Plus his body (i.e. joints) is already used to carrying this weight. Lots of guys break down when carrying even more weight than their body should.
