Let me make it clear that I despised T.O.'s behavior last year (and his last year at SF) and I was more than happy that the Eagles suspended him.
However, it is difficult to pass up a guy like this - with Saban as the coach. Wherever T.O. goes, this is his last shot at succeeding. Perhaps someone is wise enough to tell him that. Saban's leadership may just be the ticket for T.O. But, there would have to be some items in the contract about behavior.
If we were able to sign T.O., the offense would be the most talented we've had at the skill positions, once Culpepper were healthy. If we lucked out and Ricky's appeal worked, consider:
QB - Culpepper
RB - R. Brown / R. Williams
WR - T.O.
WR - Chambers
TE - McMichael
#3 WR - Booker
That's as talented a set of skill position players as there are in the league. Only Indy would be as good. Of course, affordability is the big factor. Personally, I suspect we will not be able to afford T.O.
As an affordable alternative - Keyshawn Johnson is one possibility. However, he's not a deep threat and speed would really help this WR crew.
The O-line is coming together. Shelton is not a great LT, but he's a pure LT (1st we've had since Richmond Webb). And, he's the best since Webb. With Houck's coaching, the unit should continue to improve and build on last year. We do need either a center, RG or RT. It seems Hadnot is versatile enough to play either C or RG; and Carey may be able to play either RT or RG - so, another O-lineman would be useful if we don't spend $$$ on T.O.
If we somehow obtained T.O. the draft would focus on defense. Or, if we don't get him, then a good WR (like a Chad Jackson) would be a good selection. I don't think Huff will fall to us - he seems to be moving up rather than down. An O-lineman would be a possibility. I really like Deuce Lutui of USC. He's a mammoth OG who would fit right in. But, we should want to trade down before drafting him.
Defensively, it would be great to have another DB (Safety, ideally), LB and DT. Another possibility is trading down and picking up a Chad Greenway or Bobby Carpenter. Carpenter has great size for the 3/4 LB spot (6'3, 255) and with his speed can rush the passer. With Dom Capers, you never know. He could become another Kevin Greene type player.
