With Carey's record of being a former 1st round pick, and playing both left and right tackle, he is going to be expensive to bring back; too expensive??

Last year the Packers tagged DT Corey Williams and then traded him to Cleveland for a 2nd round pick. A very neat trick in my opinion.

If Corey Williams is worth a 2nd, a guy who was a 6th round pick and was
decent for the Packers(not great by any standards), how much is Vernon Carey worth????

Why, oh why, would we just let him walk and get nothing???

Or do we just give in and overpay him????

I'd offer Indy Carey and Soliai for their 1st if they end up somewhere in the middle. If they finish well I wouldn't include Soliai.

This would be very tempting to Indy. They are desperate for a quality veteran Olineman and looking for a big man on the interior Dline.

I'm not sure what's going on with Carey. by all rights, he should be dominating at RT and for whatever reason it's just not happening. I tend to believe the lack of a decent right guard has hampered him. IMO, keep him and pay him what he's worth. good tackles are hard to find and with the down year, maybe you can get him for a bargain.

Carey hasn't been dominating this year at alll, but I think that is directly related to the lack of a quality RG. Donald Thomas was HUGE to this line . . . and we have yet to find his replacement.

That being said, he will be expensive . . . I'm talking 6 to 7 million a year expensive . . . 20 million guaranteed expensive . . . he is a solid RT who can also play LT. It's gonna be interesting.

I actually don't agree with franchising him, but it seems that maybe the likely course of action.

I agree, and I think that's a lot of why Satele is struggling so much as well. Especially with the RG carousel that is going on.

I also noticed Carey's weight increased this season. I remember Cameron made him drop from 345 down to 335 and he had his best season in the NFL, at LT, instead of RT. I think the move back allowed him to bulk up and he might have overdone it a little. He's listed at 350 on the official site. I also noticed his direct backup, Nate Garner, is of very similar dimensions to the Cowboys current RT, Marc Colombo at 6'7" 320-325 lbs. Colombo also can move fairly well, more so than Carey. I wonder if that has any correlation to his play this year as well.

I say bring him back. Once Donald Thomas comes back healthy next year, I bet you will see a major improvement by Carey. In most games I notice how Carey will help with the right guard as much as he can because he pretty much has to.

I agree with the "keep him" idea. Sure, it'll cost money but Offensive tackles don't grow on trees in the NFL. He's proven he can be a very good RT and a pretty decent LT. That versatility, his youth and minor injury history make him a must-have. Lose him and we have to work on the whole right side of the line, keep him and it's just the RG.

your right Carey doesn't have an injury history can play both RT and LT and is still young he just needs to cut his weight and a solid RG (thomas)

wait, if we tag him doesnt that mean they have to give up a first round pick? I say just pay him the money god knows the dolphins have plenty of it!

That's if they sign him to an offer sheet. If they do that, they have to give us two first rounders. We can tag him and trade him like KC did with Jared Allen and negotiated the terms.

i'd like to resign him, he wants to play for the dolphins, he's from the U... and a hometown boy..
with a healthy Thomas we could be the best line in the league next year... run over everyone and lose like 4 games...
that'd be sweet.
if we franchise hi wont he get like 8-9 million?
if we long term him for 4-5 years we could get him for like 5 years 30 mill. a little bigger than smileys contract...

we definatly have to resign y. bell, and we will keep one of the crowder carey combo

Donald Thomas is untested... he just learning the position..., wasn't he like a walk-on..., at University...?

Donald has not reached his floor but I am tired of hearing how great he is...

Carey would benefit from a solid RG no doubt...

At this point, I'm starting to think that Vernon will be franchised, while other players like: Bell, Crowder, and Camarillo get paid.
