I never thought I would see the day.
I was always one of those guys that immediately hammered people who suggested losing to move up in the draft. The logic was just ridiculous. This is a completely different animal however.
1) With the wage scale in place, the cost of the top pick isnt nearly as expensive.
2) The rules slanted towards offense and the QB these days change things.
3) Most importantly, the player in question is the highest rated QB coming out since Manning and Elway. He is as cant miss as there has ever been. His value alone, even if you trade the pick(which we wouldnt do) is through the roof. If a team foolish enough not to select Luck themselves lands the first pick, you will see the most epic trade ever. That pick will cost a price that most people cant seem to fathom. Ive seen things thrown out that arent even close to what a team will ask for in return for that pick.
This is a once in a generation thing. The value of losing out and getting the first pick this season is likely greater than the value of hoisting the Lombardi trophy at the end of this season. For this reason, I am actively rooting for my team to lose each and every week. Never thought I would see the day. Never.
Now I would never root for losses to slide up a few spots from say 15th pick to 9th pick or something. The value just is never there. Its all about taking the correct player at that point. But, the first pick this year is something else. Its very much worth it to lose every game.
Usually I argue winning is good because its something a team must learn to do, especially if you have a bunch of young players. Winning in the NFL is hard and its an art form that must be practiced. But, the value of that experience does not supercede getting Andrew Luck.
