How’s this for a dinner party:

Three generations of Miami Dolphins quarterbacks – Bob Griese, Dan Marino and Ryan Tannehill.

And their host? Only the winningest coach in NFL history.

A few weeks back, Don Shula organized the A-list quarterback summit at one of his popular steakhouses.

“We talked football,” Tannehill said Tuesday. “Heard some old stories and had a good time. It’s nice. You have two Hall of Fame players, a Hall of Fame coach sitting at the table with you, there’s just so much knowledge, so much experience.”

Perhaps some of Marino’s legendary temper rubbed off on his young successor.

Because Tannehill was red-hot during Tuesday’s minicamp-opening practice, chewing out receivers Rishard Matthews and Gerald Ford on separate occasions.

In part, it was boiled-over frustration after he threw an interception and misfired on several other occasions.

But it was also a glimpse into Tannehill’s new place in Miami’s hierarchy: Atop the player leadership pyramid.

“To come out here and have that on our first day of minicamp is really kind of unacceptable,” he told reporters after practice. “Now I’m more apt to step up and say something and make a statement. That’s part of playing the quarterback position. Now I feel more comfortable. I have the respect of my teammates around me and I can do that.”

I agree. Good if it was leadership, but he has to lead by example and do his part consistently. Today he didn't. Yelling because you are frustrated with your own shortcomings only makes teammates sick of you.

Jay Cutler anyone?

Shula is awesome. It's about time Tannehill started taking charge on the field.

Sent from my phone, so please forgive any typos.

This is at least the 4th time I have heard that Tannehill has blown up over mistakes made by Rishard Matthews. Regardless of Rishard's decent efforts when called on to play slot receiver when Gibson got injured last year, he appears to be the player who repeatedly pisses off Ryan.
With the WR talent assembled this year, I woudn't be surprised if Hickey just happens to trade Matthews for a 5th round pick to a team like Carolina or Cleveland. Just a hunch.

Lol mathews this is why hes on the hot seat. He better hope binns hazel or another WR dont ball out in camp or hes toast

Thou shall not speak ill of Matthews on FH, one or two posters will pee themselves. He seems to be the next megatron to a few on here... never understood why, hes a decent 4 maybe 3 wr but if he doesnt make the roster it wont bother me at all.

Wow I hadn't heard, although I haven't been following the press as much this year. Didn't Tannehill used to get all pissed off in college too? On the flip side, didn't Matthews and Tannehill have good chemistry last year after Gibson went down? I remember Matthews doing well unless I am confused. So in that case maybe it is working as motivation...or quite possibly Matthews is just having a terrible time learning the new offense.

First, the article made clear that both of the mistakes were the fault of the WRs. Second, both Philbin and Ryan are upset with Mathews. That means Mathews is making repeated mistakes. This mistake was lack of effort, and that is totally unacceptable. I believe this is a very positive sign. While Ryan deserves most of the criticism he receives, he does not deserve any blame for his behavior.

I think his point is that mediocre quarterbacks shouldn't be yelling at anyone.

A terrific dinner, Philbin was the valet. Jus kiddin'

As the fans that we are, we can all agree that had to be amazing to sit with 2 great qb's and a LEGENDARY coach!

"Hey Joe, bring the car around.." -Shula

What? How is David Woodley not invited to this special dinner? This is an outrage!!!

Fake it 'til you make it.

If he doesn't assume the persona of a franchise QB, he'll never become one. That doesn't necessarily mean yelling, but it does mean holding teammates accountable and acting as a leader. Doesn't matter how good/bad he is; it's the approach needed for the position. Of course, it doesn't guarantee success, but failing lead as a QB guarantees failure.
