But while he would love nothing better than to make the Super Bowl an annual trip, he wants to be doing it throwing passes rather than pitching products.
“I want to be in this game,” Tannehill told the Finsiders. “I don’t want to be making the rounds here at radio row. I want to be playing in the game and getting ready to win. Until I’m there — and even when you get there, you want to keep coming back — it’s something I’m looking forward to, the process of getting here.”
Tannehill made great strides in 2014, his third season in the NFL and with the Dolphins, and it’s that improvement that’s perhaps the biggest reason for optimism as the organization looks ahead to the 2015 season.
General Manager Dennis Hickey said as much when he addressed the media at the Senior Bowl a couple of weeks ago, and Dan Marino echoed those sentiments to the Finsiders last week.
“It feels great to have the support of the upper-level guys,” Tannehill said. “I think I’m on the right path. I think I made some strides this year, but I’m nowhere near where I want to be.”
Tannehill became in 2014 the first Dolphins quarterback other than Marino to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a season and he also set a franchise record with 392 completions.
Beyond the numbers, Tannehill showed better command of the offense as the weeks went by and also made major contributions with his running ability.
“I definitely feel like I get better as the year went on,” said Tannehill, who had a run of 30 yards or longer in three consecutive games. “I got comfortable. It took me a few games to settle in and get comfortable, get comfortable with the new concepts we were doing and everything like that. Once I did that, I felt like I really settled in, started making some more plays and the guys around me really stepped up their game as well.
“The more time you spend in a system, the more comfortable you get. Spending all last year being able to run the system, having the familiarity come back, it’s a luxury. I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to working with (offensive coordinator Bill Lazor) over the offseason, looking at areas where we can improve, game situations, personally fundamentals, all those areas. We have this long offseason to prepare for next year.”
