Miami Dolphins fans have generally tossed in the towel on this season -- at least based on what I see on my twitter timeline and in my email inbox. And I would say there might be a player or two in the Miami lockerroom that has seen a shift in the way business is being done. One even told me Wednesday that "coaches are in self-preservation mode."

But quarterback Ryan Tannehill?

He looks out toward the horizon that offers a Sunday meeting against the New England Patriots and figures it is worth sailing toward, even following last Sunday's loss to Baltimore in what was considered a de facto playoff game.

“We didn’t play well in a big game for us, but the season is not over," Tannehill said Wednesday. "Obviously, it’s not fully in our hands now, but we can still control what we can control. That starts with this game on Sunday."

Tannehill went on to call the coming Patriot game "a big game for us."

"I’m excited about this opportunity," Tannehill added.

But stranger things have happened. (Work with me here, ok?)
This game matters in the greater context. And it matters to individuals.

Consider:

For Dion Jordan it matters because he will likely get a chance to show off his athletic prowess by getting a few opportunities to cover tight end Rob Gronkowski.

"If I have to do it to help my team, then I’ll definitely do it," Jordan said. "This year, they’ve put me in position to cover other guys. I had to get ready mentally and physically to do it. If it happens this week, I’ll be prepared."

For Jarvis Landry, it is an opportunity to gauge his success now that he's no longer a secret. After last week, for example, Baltimore defensive coordinator Dean Pees found Landry after the game to share his feelings about the rookie.

"He just said, 'You’re a great player,' " Landry said. "His job was to contain me a little bit and much credit goes to them. When you think about a Ravens defense, you always know they’ve had great defenses and great defensive coordinators, just took it as a compliment."

Yes, a great compliment. But you don't think a Bill Belichick defense will similarly take note of Landry? Yes, it will.

The season is over if you read posts from the Finheaven groupthink who can only focus on Dallas Thomas, RJ Stanford, and gum wrapper jokes. But we have a fair shot Sunday and a win has us right back in the thick of it. Lets make it a 3 game win steak against the Pats.

how can you realistically think we have a fair shot sunday? yea its the nfl and any given sunday, that's why they play the games yada yada yada but seriously, this could be like Cameron worrell covering randy moss bad.

Lets go break their little home game winning spree. We can't ever win a big game at home when it matters maybe we'll play better on the road. Speaking of home games , our crowd for the Ravens game was embarrassing. I don't even consider our home field an "advantage" really , it's sad.

you aint beating nothing with wheeler and trusnick as your starting lbs except traffic if you leave early enough

We blew it - its that simple. Miami had the chance to beat the Ravens, then this game could have been a freebie where a loss doesnt hurt us. We didnt get the job done, at home, vs a banged up Ravens team.

Im pleased Ryan isnt giving up, as he needs to be a leader and believe he can win every game, but the fact is, like it or not, call it doom and gloom, but we are done.

Because we beat them last year with less

yeah and they had no gronk then which drives that entire offense...and there's no way this teams gonna do anything against that downhill running game with wheeler and trusnick as starting backers...i mean no way...not to mention all the rush 4 and drop 7 and still get home unless the qb takes the quick underneath the sticks or forces it that is coming sunday due to the right tackle or the inability to set up and go thru progressions cause of him...

we done...reality sucks but its the truth...too many personnel issues too many standing behind gimp horses just too much to overcome

In case anyone forgot, we gave up 4 sacks, 5 more QB hits, and a lot of pressures and we still won with a horrendous OL and a backup CB. We had Tyson Clabo at RT and Bryant McKinnie at LT, and Will Davis and Jimmy Wilson playing the 2nd CB position. If we can win with that, we can win this weekend.

Their Defense has significantly improved since the first time they played the Dolphins and they aren't even the same team that lost to the Phins last year.
