“I think no matter what it is and who it is in the league, what head coach, I think the building kind of takes on his mindset and the way he goes about things,” Tannehill told reporters regarding Adam Gase, who’s starting his second year with the team. “That’s definitely true in this building. The fire he has and the competitive spirit, the will to win . . . I think you see a closer, tightknit building than we’ve had in the past.”

About 5 years ago I was listening to Sedano's morning show in Miami and he described walking into the Davie HQ as feeling "icy". I don't think I'll ever forget his describing it. Tannehill was unfortunate to experience the organization at its lowest point in team history. That includes the 1-15 season in 2007.

Good article.....It proves that a good coach is essential in todays NFL, but winning is a cure all. If the Dolphins had gone say 8 and 8 0r 7 and 9 would we be having this fuzzy feeling? Gase has definitely put his stamp on this team with strong leadership and more importantly a PLAN.

You know I knew about Ireland, Philbin and Aponte but how did that actually translate to the players? Did the players choose sides? were they concentrating on politics instead of football? What was it that made it icy? Loosing?

I think the biggest issue for the players was that both Ireland and Philbin have poor social skills and were terrible at dealing with them. The back stabbing and maneuvering by Philbin, Ireland and Aponte certainly caused problems since they all reported to Ross and tried to position themselves as his closest confidante. Credit Ross for bringing in Tannebaum to take control of the GM and coaching staff. Everyone is now on the same sheet of music which wasn't so prior to his arrival.

I find it shocking that a coach in todays NFL or any sport for that matter can have poor social skills. You are dealing with athletes from all races, backgrounds and now cultures with the influx of international players. Was this a red flag that the Dolphins organization missed when they hired Philbin? Don't we do a thorough investigation on all new hires including coaches?

Winning is contagious. I know that this is the most optimistic I've felt since the 2009 off-season, after we last won the AFC East.

The reports were that Ross was so impressed with Philbin's interview and the binder he prepared for it that he was the choice over Mike McCoy. This time around Ross stepped aside and let Tannenbaum do the hiring.

Good coaches rarely have bad seasons, even when they are lacking in talent. Shula had 2 losing seasons in 25 yrs.
He took over a ragtag group of players his 1st season with the phins and went 10-4.
His worst season was 6 wins.
If Gase is the real deal, this team will get double digit wins, regardless of the schedule. He has put together a well balanced and talented team and they will be hard to beat. Everyone talks about how many tough opponents are on the schedule. Look at it the other way. The phins will be a difficult offense to defend and the defense has some good young talent with the potential to wreak havoc on QBs.
Which team on their schedule can automatically pencil in a win with a average effort? Even the Pats aren't foolish enough to take this team lightly. They will have to bring their A game if they want a win.

In hindsight, knowing what we do know now about Philbin's bullheadedness, his refusal to fire Sherman until threatened with losing his own job (how's that for not putting the wellbeing of the team first?), and the Sherman Taylor nepotism, it's all the more mind-blowing how this franchise entrusted the development of potentially its most valuable asset to the inexperienced son in law of Philbin's butthole buddy - especially considering how raw/inexperienced he was. Essentially Zac Taylor and his on job training was the epitome of "the blind leading the blind." And then finally, when the offense was rid of Sherman, as an apparent concession to him, Philbin kept Taylor employed, rather than cleaning house.

For all intents and purposes, Tannehill was a victim in the crossfire of the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

Gase was Ross' guy.

Damn it I am always a "homer" in the pre-season but even the worst pessimist has to like the reports out of Davie since Gase has been the coach. I don't remember this ever being this way with any of the other coaches and that's not me being a homer.
