But Tannenbaum is anxious to start going at it on a full-time basis to help the Dolphins take the next step and get back to the playoffs.
“It’s been great,” Tannenbaum told the Finsiders at the Super Bowl. “It’s kind of been like a soft start here. I’ve been down there a couple of times. Just so impressed with the people, from (President/CEO) Tom Garfinkel and all the people on the business side, and (Head Coach) Joe Philbin and (General Manager) Dennis Hickey on the football side. A lot of good people, and I’m excited just to come in and add to the mix.”
Tannenbaum indicated he spent some time at the Super Bowl talking with representatives of Dolphins players.
The Dolphins have 12 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents March 10, according to overthecap.com, and a priority over the next few weeks will be evaluating the roster.
“We’ve got to do two things; if we do these two things right, we’re going to be really successful,” Tannenbaum said. “One, we’ve got to correctly evaluate our roster. And what I mean by that, in a cap system some guys are just going to graduate, and when they do, we have to celebrate that. They’ve been coached, they’ve been developed, they’re going to make a lot of money other places. Again, we have to embrace that and celebrate it. With that said, we have to know which ones of our young emerging players could be starters, winning starters, in 2015. That’s job one.
“Job number two, we’ve got to take that core group of guys — 35, 40 players, whatever that number is — (and) we’ve got to get them better in the offseason. (Owner) Steve Ross, his mandate is looking into innovation and anything we can do to get our players better. And that’s a big challenge for us. So when the offseason begins, we’re going to have some really interesting announcements soon of other additions for our staff in terms of just making our players better. And they’re going to feel it. They’re going to feel better. We’re going to give them every resource possible for them to play at a high level and feel good about their bodies.”

He may not have the 40-yard dash speed, but that information to me just gives us a better chance over the long term to make the best decision for us.
“Obviously, you need to finish strong in this league. The last couple of years the team was positioned well, (but) didn’t get over the hump. And we’ll look at everything. Is it injury prevention? Anything we think can give us the advantage, how the roster is managed, a lot of those discussions right now interestingly are going on in the NBA. You could look at the Cleveland Cavaliers, they’re constantly talking about LeBron’s minutes. People are just looking at it differently than maybe we did five or 10 years ago. We never heard about Michael Jordan or Larry Bird wanting to come out in the regular season, but maybe they should have. The more information we now have at the professional level, it’s all about giving these players the best chance to be successful over the long season. To LeBron’s credit, I think they’re being very open-minded about it.”
