I've always believed that the first 3-4 games of the season are often an extension of Training Camp, meaning that teams are still fine tuning, finding out things about themselves, and learning from their opponents. That's my best explanation of how a team like New England gets stomped 31-0 and then comes back to win the Super Bowl in the same year.

The Miami Dolphins will be the most exciting team in the NFL this year because our team is filled with new players, new coaches, and will be a work in progress all year. That said, here's my analysis after 2 games.

QB - I really believe we have found a QB in Gus Frerrotte. Nothing has changed my mind so far. He is the calm, cool veteran, who acts as a coach in the huddle, and will rarely get rattled and make stupid mistakes. Gus simply executes the game plan and takes what the defense gives him. He knows this is the best way to stay employed in the NFL, even if it means losing some regular season games.

RB - A work in progress all season. The time Ronnie missed in training camp has clearly set him back. Rickly looms large in the horizon and our O-line has not learned how to run block yet. In Week 1, Denver stacked the box which allowed us to open up the passing game. In Week 2, the opposite occurred. Using the cover 2, the Jets dared Miami to run and we couldn't do it. This group will go as the O-line goes.

WR's - A good showing in week 1 and a bad showing in week 2. The cover 2 defense made it more difficult for the passing game, but there were blown opportunities. This group needs leadership. Chambers needs to step up to the plate and assert himself. He needs to have a dominant game and set the tone for the rest of the group. Right now we have a group of #2 WR's and no leader.

TE's - Randy McMichael continues to display pro bowl play and leadership. Lorenzo Diamond has been quietly effective. Linehan may lean on this group a bit more as the season develops.

O-line - In my view, Hudson Houck has done a wonderful job of teaching this group pass blocking. Defenses stacked the box against us every game last year and Houck obviously wanted to be ready for that again this year. Predictably, Denver stacked the box, but got burned, because we were ready. Unfortunately, we weren't ready for the Cover 2 from NY, which slowed our passing attack and put the pressure on our running game. Run blocking will continue to be a work in progress. This group is also limited by talent. We had no one quick enough to handle Abraham and we still don't get a push from the middle - very important for the running game. Ricky may ignite the running game, but this group is going to struggle for awhile
because it will take some time to for Houck to find the right combination.

D-line - Fantastic unit that has performed very well. Every player along the line has had at least 1 big play and they perform well as a unit. A few mistakes on Sunday with gap assignments, but a great group that will improve. Jason also looks like defensive MVP to me right now.

Linebackers - No problems here. Not even the venerable Junior Seau has shown any weaknesses. Zach is having a pro bowl year and we found a real gem with Channing Crowder.

Defensive Backs - Reggie Howard was badly exposed Sunday. This set off a chain of events. Sam played poorly and both safeties came up short. Saban is going to have to work his magic with this unit. We may see more of Travis Daniels and possible Yeremiah Bell. This unit benefited from the pressure of the D-line against Denver, but was exposed by NY.

Special Teams - A screw up on Mare's attempted field goal is to be expected. The young guys are doing well for the most part and I'm not too worried about our special teams.

Summary - Our biggest concerns lie with the running game and secondary. If teams follow NY's cover 2 plan, and they will, we must respond with a solid running game. I don't know if we have an answer, other than Ricky, right now. Saban will keep a close eye on the secondary and may shake it up if we see another performance from Howard like this past Sunday's. Perhaps more blitzes and pressure will take the pressure off the secondary.

very good analysis. I would disagree with Gus' analysis. But everything else was dead on. When it comes to Gus I would have to agree with the dreaded Miami Heralds analysis "With his line unable to provide consistent protection or running lanes and a few drops from his targets, Gus Frerotte didn't get great help. Then again, he didn't help himself with some terribly wayward throws on which his receivers had no chance without superpowers."

The Panthers and Bills games will really help me solidify my opinion of Gus once and for all.

As for the rest of the analysis, I give you great credit for stating that our Offnesive line wasnt the worst like alot of others here. They are definitely improved. Thats not to say they diont have further to go but it is encouraging. Very good take on the secondary and how Howard's play started a chain. I'm going to review the game tonight and look for that perspective. Overall very good post!

Thank you for the generous comments. I think we may be close to agreeing on Gus. I don't think Gus will go to the Pro Bowl this year, but I do think he is a calming influence on a very unstable offense. This unit has been so badly criticized and so many changes have been made that an experienced veteran who knows Linehan's system and doesn't get rattled easily seems like a good thing for now. Gus will disappoint sometimes, but he is also capable of some decent games as well. No question he is a temporary answer, but if he could just get us settled down and into some kind of rhythm, then I would say Gus is the right QB for now.

I only have one thing to add, I think we should leave Zach to roam behind the DL and plug the holes when they open. We should bring the blitz more from Crowder and Seau.

Excellent post. I agree with the majority of your analysis. I believe as the team continues to get comfortable with the new systems on both sides of the ball you will see more big plays, and big plays change the course of the game. A little more consistent pressure on the oppossing QB would helpt o mask someof our secondary deficiencies. Gus is Gus, he'll help us some and hurt us some, but until the rest of the team learns the system I believe he will help more than hurt.

Good post. Going into the season I think it was known we'd be weak on the OL and secondary, and I think the coaching's been good to mask and improve this as we're 1-1, have only given up 27 pts in 2 games and could have won both. I think Gus, being a veteran familiar with the system, is a good calming influence and a leader, and after watching some of the QB performances this weekend, I don't think we're in that bad a shape. We have a chance to win any game we're in, which is a lot more than can said for last season.

Good thread. I'm more concerned about run blocking. Chambers needs to earn that contract because everyone was banking on his Pro Bowl potential. If he can get 800+ with a terrible QB and pass block, he should be getting at least 1000 with Frerotte and the better pass protection.

I agree as well. It's nice to see a level headed & positive thread.

Chambers needs to FOCUS better, or Saban should experiment with the starting line up.

We need to win the home games, this Sunday will be exciting. At least all the AFC East teams have the same record so far...

Yes, but the Jets have a division win and the Dolphins have a division loss. which puts the Jets on top and the Dolphins on bottom.

Dead on IMO. The run blocking is STILL atrocious, and we can be beaten just about singlehandedly by opposing QB/WRs because our secondary can be exposed. Frerotte is definitely good enough to keep us in games rather than losing them for us by himself a la the QBs of last year.

I'm looking forward to Ricky's coming back because I think it'll make defenses have to respect the run a lot more than they are now. Ricky might've done a lot more damage against the Jets' cover 2 than we did Sunday.

And I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Ricky AND Ronnie out there together, with Ronnie splitting out and catching longballs against linebackers. THAT's where we can create a truly distinctive offense.

Good post, notes below:

QB - I really believe we have found a QB in Gus Frerrotte. Nothing has changed my mind so far. ---OK, we do have a passing game with him but he's not the playmaker we need at the most important position on the field. No matter how bad the OL or CB's are, QB is the biggest need going into next year.

--Ronnie has to show more urgency and instincts. its troubling that sammie Morris' YPC doubled those of Brown's against the same defense.

---Agreed, should be OK by midseason, will struggle at times.

D-line - Fantastic unit that has performed very well. Every player along the line has had at least 1 big play and they perform well as a unit. A few mistakes on Sunday with gap assignments, but a great group that will improve. Jason also looks like defensive MVP to me right now.

---Missing pass rush in second half was troubling.

Linebackers - No problems here. Not even the venerable Junior Seau has shown any weaknesses. Zach is having a pro bowl year and we found a real gem with Channing Crowder.

---Junior is a liability. His free-lancing causes big plays for both sides. I watched him give up big runs on third and long. I don't think he has the discipline to play well consistently for a good defense. He's still plays like he's playing for a bad SD defense where he has to be the star. Ehhh, just make the easy ones Junior. Stop the 3rd and sevens to your side.

---Embarrassing. Howard isnt a starter or nickel guy. He is incapable of jamming WR's at the line or playing off them. He should be cut. TBuck(ey) doesn't provide safety help. Sam comes up small at the worst times. This secondary is priority #2 in offseason IMHO.

Special Teams - A screw up on Mare's attempted field goal is to be expected. The young guys are doing well for the most part and I'm not too worried about our special teams.

THAT IS THE MOST ACCURATE ASSESMENT I'VE READ OF OUR RECEIVERS, STEP IT UP CHAMBERS!!

Nice analysis. Jumping ahead a little bit, I think we may see Alabi at LT at some point this season. That's an obvious trouble spot and Saban will want to know if he has something in Alabi before venturing into a strong tackle draft next April. There are obvious holes on the team, but I like the effort and I believe the Dolphins will improve. I'm not looking at this year for wins and losses, as much as overall improvement.

I do hope Chambers has a breakout game and season. He hasn't looked very good so far and that is a concern.

I think the only way we see Alabi at LT is if we've lost 9 games before we've won 6 and are out of the playoff race. You won't see a rookie LT drafted in the 5th starting for a team that still has a chance.
