Active Roster
Long time read, first time poster. Hailing from NJ, I've dealt with my fair share of criticism from annoying Jet fans and I'm so happy with the win yesterday. It's unfortunate we're 2-3 and we could have easily been 4-1, 3-2, etc. but the fact is we're not but we're still in the thick of things. Heading into the bye week we know a lot about our football team.
QB: Chad Henne looked like Chad Pennington with a terminator arm last night. I wouldn't get overly excited about him yet but I thought we did a great job of calling plays to put him in a position to be successful. To Henne's credit he made some plays our there. I think we all got a +1 in confidence in him. I still like Thigpen trade because he is a pretty solid QB too who is also big and mobile. If things do fail with Henne he is a solid #2 option.
Grade: B
RB: #1 running game in NFL enough said. Ronnie might be the best RB at taking what his blockers give him. He is such a patient and crafty runner. Ricky must be doing some serious yoga because he is looking refreshed. I'm not sure I've ever seen him look so big and quick. One thing I get nervous about with both Ricky and Ronnie is sometimes they are careless with the football and are prone to fumble.
Grade: A+
WR: So we don't have that true #1 or that guy we can throw the flag pattern to but this group has been solid. Other than Ginn no one has dropped the football and we've seen them come up with plays. Camarillo has quietly come back into the mix and he is very sure handed. My favorite is Bess it just seems like anytime we need a catch he manages to get open. We still need more out of this group but so far they've been about par.
Grade: C+
TE: Fassano and Hannos haven't exactly been involved with things offensively and when they have been they've been poor. Blocking they've been solid you can't have the #1 run game without them blocking so we'll give credit there but we need to get more out of these guys. We miss David Martin.
Grade: C
O-Line: They got off to shaky start but have steadily improved on a weekly basis and are looking better than I have remembered in a long time. They are consistently getting the push at the line, protecting the QB, opening holes for the run, they do a great job on schemes and pulling off the line. Justin Smiley has really done an excellent job this year on getting downfield and blocking. Vernon Carey looks so much more comfortable playing in his natural position, Grove, and Long are doing their thing too. These guys seem to be very prideful in what they do.
Grade: A
Defensive Line: So we've looked solid against the run but our pass rush hasn't been there. I haven't heard the names Joey Porter or Jason Taylor nearly enough. We need to put more pressure on the QB in order to help our anemic secondary out otherwise teams are going to continue to pass on us all day everyday.
Grade: B-
Secondary: This is our kryptonite this season. I like Sean Smith and Vontae Davis a lot but they aren't polished enough quite yet. I would like to see Davis play more and get him more experience. Will Allen seems to have more theatrical skills than he does football. He dances and waives his arms any decent play he makes but he gets burnt a ton. Gibril Wilson has been a step slow all season and has also been a piss poor tackler. I've always wanted to see Bell get more time but he doesn't look like the same player as he was pre-injury. This is going to be a glaring problem for us. We need these guys to start gelling like a unit and one or two guys to step up big as individuals but I just don't see that happening.
Grade: D+
Special Teams: Well our kicking has been solid but other than that we've been lackluster for special teams. Nothing particularly bad but nothing well either. It would be nice to see us get better field position with some nice returns but we haven't been netting anything. As quick as Bess looks in the slot he looks slow returning punts. Hopefully this improves as the season goes on.
