Teams that will travel the most miles and the most time zones this season

Even though there are historic rivalries, I think the NFL should re-align the divisions based on geography. Something like:

AFC Central
IND, CIN, CLE, PIT

AFC North
BUF, NYJ, NYG, NE

AFC South/East
ATL, TB, JAC, MIA

AFC West
LV, AR, DEN, KC

NFC North
MIN, GB, CHI, DET

NFC East
PHI, BAL, WAS, CAR

NFC West
SEA, SF, LAC, LAR

NFC South
DAL, HOU, NO, TEN

Yeah I mean probably close to the top every year since our division rivals are no where near us lol

I have always said this would increase NFL revenue by a minimum of 20%. The rivalries that would form from cross state competition would be college like and even in bad years beating the cross state enemy would fill the stands. I have always wondered why the NFL is so closed minded about this. I know they think some of the old rivalries would be broken but the what the fans would get in return would far out weigh what they lose.

I like it and I could imagine a boost in attendance for a team like Jacksonville since it would be easier for opponents fans to travel.

Jerry Jones would never go for it though.

To be fair, part of that comes from being a coastal team. And teams coming to play in Miami also team to have long road trips.
I’ve been saying it since we went to 4 divisions. Miami should be in the South with Indy in the North and Baltimore in the East. But nostalgia. I guess.

And Dallas should be in the South and Carolina in the East. There’s no need to change Conference. Those moves fix it.

Man look at Pittsburgh's schedule they don't even travel out of their time zone! Farthest trip of the year? Probably to Carolina.

Seattle probably always going to be at the top of the list for the most travel just because there really aren't any other teams in the vicinity. San Fran the closest team and they are like 800 miles apart.

Miami is in a similar situation to Seattle based on our location. Fortunately, its 2022 and every team has private jets. The travel isn't as bad as it used to be.

Agreed 100%

Travel has an underrated impact on team performance. Over a 15 season span, here are splits of how away teams performed based on distance traveled.

But another factor that has to be accounted for is time zone change. Here is a graph showing how time zone changes correlates with winning. Teams that cross 3 time zones going west win 40% of the time, while that number is 35.2% going east. This difference is bc it feels like 6 am when beginning pre-game warm up for any west coast team playing on the east coast.

So while those numbers aren’t good, it’s not quite as bad as it seems. Being 4th in total travel sucks. But at least we have to deal w only an average amount of time zone changes, and we are traveling west (which isn’t as bad) in those instances.

The fact we are located in the southeast corner of the country means travel is never going to be kind to us. Also having our 3 division rivals literally be the most northern teams on the east coast is kind of BS.

So yeah, we get jobbed a bit here, but a team like the Seahawks is really getting screwed.
