Tell me something about Matt Roth.

He had many good plays last year when they'd insert him in around the goal line. I think another year in the system, a year of strength and conditioning, and the natural improvement one has between their first and second year will help Matt a lot. I think he realized last year sure power alone won't do it in the NFL and will alter a few things to help him be more successful.

He also has a lot of skilled players ahead of him on the roster. We'll see what he's got this year. I heard he's bulked up big time.

My favorite memory of Matt Roth is not his one sack or his 22 tackles, it was week 17 against New England when Reggie Howard popped the ball out of Cassel's hands in the end zone and instead of celebrating the safety, Roth dove to catch the ball... He wanted a touchdown.
He didn't get his hands on it as the ball went out the back of the endzone but I loved to see his awareness and desire.

He's in a better position to contribute.

He went from playing an open end(Jason Taylor) in college to playing closed end(Kevin Carter) in the Pros. It's a significant change in responsibilites and playstyle. Instead of rushing upfield, Roth now has more responsibility towards the run.

He's bulked up some since last year. He reportedly played in the 270 pound range last year, which is very undersized for the position. Despite that, he did a fairly good job holding up vs. the run, and was included in the short yardage defense alot of the time.

At 285 pounds, Roth is in a much better position to play his role, and I think it is a better fit for his skills then doing what he did in college. In college, he was a power guy playing the role of a speed rusher. When he got sacks, he didnt get them through pure speed or fancy spin moves. He came at them over and over and beat them physical power oriented moves and wore them down over the course of the game.

To say he is powerful is not entirely correct. Roth was known for his "motor" at Iowa. Added size, strength and experience will put him in a great position to contribute this year. With JT playing more and more LB as he ages Roth will be asked to step in and IMO will be very solid for years to come.
