I have not seen as much Mularkey bashing when we win. Don't get me wrong I still want to see him locked out of the offices...for good. I'm just wondering if Saban got on his a$$, or if the players are just playing better. Or maybe he is changing his playcalling, what do you guys think?
My biggest problem with mularkey, is not his trick plays, it's his use or perhaps misuse of them.
The WR reverse is best used once the D has started setting their sights on your RB b/c he is taking it to them. this play is designed to get the D going one direction then using the speed of the WR outrun them to the other sideline. Well, if the D is in any kind of a zone or pass defense, or if they are not respecting the run enough to send 8 to 10 players in the direction of the RB then the play is doomed to fail.
Also, again the fake WR reverse should be used very often to keep the defense at bay, afraid of it, and loosen up the inside running lanes a little b/c it forces the D line to be more observant and less aggressive when attacking the RB. This could be a great bread and butter play when it is used correctly instead of being thrown into a game hap-hazardly.
Imagine if you will a play in which we run the reverse to Booker (who has a good arm) We are set in the I formation. Fake the handoff to the fullback, then pitch to Ronnie who hands off to booker. Meanwhile chambers starts to block then acts like the defender beat him and takes off down the sidelines, and booker can hit him with it deep. Now Run this axact same play only sometimes give the ball to the FB, sometimes have the pitch to ronnie be the play, but everyone else as the bluff, if the defender on chambers sticks with him into coverage booker could just keep it and run. I forgot about Mcmike lined up on the strong side with Chambers crossing and running a deep fade route to the weak side of the field.
This would stretch the D and force them to cover literally all areas of the field at once. You could 6 different plays with set of motions and put the ball anywhere on the field. This would be run out of the power I formation with 2 WR. This is also our base offense and would be a great way to keep the D on their toes, and at the same time get the focus away from our QB, which unfortunately is still our weakest link on O. I do have optamism and think Joey is nothing but upside to come, but for now, we still don't have a premeir QB.
