I have not seen as much Mularkey bashing when we win. Don't get me wrong I still want to see him locked out of the offices...for good. I'm just wondering if Saban got on his a$$, or if the players are just playing better. Or maybe he is changing his playcalling, what do you guys think?

I've been very critical of Mularkey early on because he has been responsible for some very questionable play-calling. I think his scheme yesterday was the right one. We would've lost if we tried to run the ball more often, Minnesota's run defense was too stout, and it was the right choice to attack them through the air. The only complaint I have from yesterday, is on third on long, he calls the RB screen play way too often. It's too the point that I predicted the call correctly the last three times he called it over the last two weeks. Can you believe it, he didn't call any trick plays yesterday. I think Saban had a talk with him over the last month, because the trick plays are being a lot less often now.

The Kansas City game, he called a pretty good game too, until he tried to get fancy with a WR reverse when it was unnecessary. We were averaging 6 yards a carry at that point, there was no need to get fancy.

These Mularkey haters must not have been around here a year ago. Linehans' offense at the half way point in 2005 was worse in my opinion. It took him a long time before things started getting better, and in case anyone forgot, we had 7 losses in 2005 before things started going well.....

Can't we just give Mularkey the same patience we gave Linehan a year ago. It takes time to build a comfort level on offense, and we're making progress. We need to continue to allow Mularkey to build confidence in my opinion. Why break it all down, and have to start over from scratch with someone new???...

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Two weeks in a row that we've played better in the first half, then the second half. The "scripting" seems to have been better than Mularkey's 2nd half play-calling, recently. I'd also like to see more than 10 offensive points.

That being said, there's not much passion for Mularkey-bashing after a win. He seemed to call a better game than usual.

I understand what you are saying but break what down? Our offense is at scratch. If we promote Baggett to OC we wouldn't really be starting over after all.
To his credit, Mularkey called a good game yesterday. No trick plays. My only fault with him yesterday was in the 3rd quarter. We had the ball 2 and 2 and then 3rd and 2 and we were in shotgun formation both times. Also, he calls the hurry up offense at the weirdest times IMO. Also, we ONLY scored 10 points on offense.

I was wondering what you guys thought was the reason for the better playcalling. I would like to think Saban got on him. But then again, after a win it's hard to scrutinize.
Linehan did do better in the second half. So much so that the Rams gave him a job. Lets hope the Cardinals or some other team wants Mularkey.

i think its obvious that there are bigger problems offensively than the play calling...you can only bash the play calling when we have plays that work...

When he inserts the FB "fulltime" with Ronnie (who can't run without one) Brown...then I'll accept him.

sorry but the reason we only scored 10 pts was JH, RB, and OM and twice Chambers missed a block on the run play which got Ronnie tackled...not Mularkey.

I saw the game twice yesterday. The OLine actually opened quite a number of holes on the left side and Ronnie went the opposite way and ran right into Carey or Shelton.

Joey Harrington overthrew a wide open Chambers twice..which would've got us a first down and at "least" in field goal range...

Joey threw the ball away "twice" and both times Chambers came back towards him and was open and "scolded" Joey for totally missing it the first time and put his hands up in disbelief the second time...

Joey also overthrew Welker which would've put us in field goal range...

Oh, and he also overthrew an open Booker for a possible 1st and goal...

Then, Joey totally threw into "triple" coverage on the INT that killed yet another drive....

None of that had to do with Mularkey, sorry.

Then, Mare missed a 40 yarder this time...

need I say more?:shakeno:

My biggest problem with mularkey, is not his trick plays, it's his use or perhaps misuse of them.

The WR reverse is best used once the D has started setting their sights on your RB b/c he is taking it to them. this play is designed to get the D going one direction then using the speed of the WR outrun them to the other sideline. Well, if the D is in any kind of a zone or pass defense, or if they are not respecting the run enough to send 8 to 10 players in the direction of the RB then the play is doomed to fail.

Also, again the fake WR reverse should be used very often to keep the defense at bay, afraid of it, and loosen up the inside running lanes a little b/c it forces the D line to be more observant and less aggressive when attacking the RB. This could be a great bread and butter play when it is used correctly instead of being thrown into a game hap-hazardly.

Imagine if you will a play in which we run the reverse to Booker (who has a good arm) We are set in the I formation. Fake the handoff to the fullback, then pitch to Ronnie who hands off to booker. Meanwhile chambers starts to block then acts like the defender beat him and takes off down the sidelines, and booker can hit him with it deep. Now Run this axact same play only sometimes give the ball to the FB, sometimes have the pitch to ronnie be the play, but everyone else as the bluff, if the defender on chambers sticks with him into coverage booker could just keep it and run. I forgot about Mcmike lined up on the strong side with Chambers crossing and running a deep fade route to the weak side of the field.

This would stretch the D and force them to cover literally all areas of the field at once. You could 6 different plays with set of motions and put the ball anywhere on the field. This would be run out of the power I formation with 2 WR. This is also our base offense and would be a great way to keep the D on their toes, and at the same time get the focus away from our QB, which unfortunately is still our weakest link on O. I do have optamism and think Joey is nothing but upside to come, but for now, we still don't have a premeir QB.

You are 100% correct!

When we beat KC last week not only did everyone on Finheaven bash Mularkey for that dumb reverse but also the announcers and the media.

his playcalling in the first half, or at least the play calling was really well done. Notice how almost every reception was a comeback route or an out. They really did a good job in giving Harrington what he needs to be successful.
