I have been very critical of the Dolphins over the past few months. The way the team performed the last two weeks of the year was squarely on the preparation and coaching of the team. The Miami Dolphins should have been the 6th seed in this year's playoffs. Unfortunately, they did not take advantage of the opportunities presented.

The search for GM was puzzling and muddled. However, in the end the team might have come up with...or stumbled upon...the best solution going forward. It is disingenuous for people to argue that this was the plan all along. Dennis Hickey was not the first pick by Mr. Ross. However, at the end of the day, if Ross was intent on giving Joe Philbin more opportunities to succeed, this might be for the best for a few reasons.

1. I argued at the end of the year that if Jeff Ireland was fired and Steve Ross was not willing to clean house, Joe Philbin should be allowed to pick his own GM and maybe even be given more power to construct the roster. I have not changed my mind that Joe Philbin will prove to be an unsuccessful NFL head coach. However, I am certain he would fail as head coach if he was forced into a marriage with a GM he was unfamiliar with. The reports from Adam Schefter and Peter Schrager that Philbin and Hickey have a history together is good selling point for me. I have killed Philbin for hiring coaches based on past relationships, but not necessarily merit. While Philbin did not hire Hickey allowing him a guy he can work with is vital. This should not be one of those situations to kill Philbin for having another familiar face around. One of the reasons I argued for Brian Gaine to be GM is he knew the inner workings of the Dolphins FO and Coach Philbin. While Gaine did not get the job, after learning that Hickey has a relationship with Joe from years ago, the selection falls into my thinking from last week. Philbin has someone that he can work with more effectively to mesh a roster together. I would argue that it is more important that the HC and GM have a working relationship even if the GM is of "lesser talent" than what is out there. Forced marriages, even with a "talented talent evaluator" typically do not work in the end.

2. I love the two year deal that the team set Dennis Hickey up with. He is now aligned with Philbin. This points a few directions. One, I love the fact the writing is on the wall...this team must to commit to winning now. Personally, I am impatient. I am tired of not being relevant. Hickey and Philbin know that something must happen now, not two or three years from now to be employed by the Dolphins. I feel, right or wrong, they will get aggressive this offseason to put a winner on the field. Also, when Hickey was selected I figured, like any GM with a new deal, he would receive a four or five year deal. I was queasy that Hickey was to chart the team's course for the next half dozen years or so. That is not the case. He has a chance to show promise and if they are successful on the field than Ross can extend Philbin and Hickey into the future. If not, the team can wipe the slate clean and set up a new organizational structure going forward.

For the record, I would have cleaned house and started with a GM with the power to set up his FO and find a HC that shared the same vision going forward. However, if Joe Philbin had to be kept in the eyes of Steve Ross this might be the best of the alternatives presented. My biggest concern in the GM search was that Ross was going to force another marriage between his GM and HC. That turned out not to happen. It would have happened if other GM candidates would have accepted the post. However, by the other candidates turning down the job, perhaps the Dolphins fell upon a marriage that might work. The changes the Fins need to make are very apparent. I like the fact there is pressure for Hickey and Philbin to find success this season. While personally I think there other directions this organization should go, hopefully, the Dolphins will win their share of games next year.

The 2 year deal for Hickey saved the offseason for me. Now I am given some security that if things go South, the whole regime will be ousted and we will start fresh with a proper coach/GM search

I expect an aggressive offseason again and I like that.

Don't give Ross to much credit here, he tried his hardest to force a marriage between a new gm and Philbin. The people who refused the job were not going for it, for good reason. He settled on the only guy who would accept it.

If Ross really thought Hickey was the right move, he would have been the first person offered the job, not the 3rd, and might have been lower if other candidates didn't refuse to even come back for 2nd interviews.

We are forced to accept this hire, but don't try to spin it as the plan all along.

I hope dumb luck is on our side, and this works out for the best.

I'm concerned because of some of the things I have heard about Hickey, especially in that he seems like another Jeff Ireland in the personality department. But ultimately, if he brings in Mark Dominik I'll feel as if we've upgraded our front office decision-making. I like what the two of them did in Tampa more than I like what Jeff Ireland did here over the same span of time.

By the way Hayden, I don't think the problem here was Joe. I think it is Dawn Aponte and the power structure that the team insists is not screwed up. Lake Dawson and Nick Caserio were both very quick to say that they absolutely did not want to can Joe Philbin or have final say on his fate. In fact, they both denied it vehemently right after Armando made it a story. Now, they could both be lying, but I honestly don't see that.

To little, to late. But it is typical of you playing both sides. If Hickey fails you are going to point to your million posts trashing the Dolphins and if Hickey is successful you will point to this thread. :bobdole:

How do you know who was our first choice, second choice etc?

Not saying that Hickey was our first choice just asking...

I also like the 2 year deal, coinciding with Philbin's deal.
Could Ross have been pushing a 2 year deal all along and that was one reason why other candidates balked?

I'm not so sure about that. Look how long he kept Ireland when common fans and half the league knew he should've been let go at least two seasons ago. I like the two year contract, but I don't have any faith in Ross to make the necessary changes if things go south.

I think Hayden is way over the top in bashing Joe, but he has been saying consistently that they should bring in Gaine or someone Joe is comfortable with since it became clear we were going to keep Philbin.

While I'm not sure I agree with him, it's not bad reasoning. Right now, it is clear that this is Joe Philbin's football team. It will succeed or fail this year, and the fate of Joe and everyone else hangs in the balance. News that Hickey got a 2 year contract is IMO finally an indication that Ross may be prepared to make a clean sweep if things go south.

If anything, I honestly like the fact that Ross is willing to give his hires time to do their jobs. I just don't like the hires that much. :(

I didn't like the hire, and didn't like that Ross didn't clean house, but it is what it is and Ross may have just stumbled into the best situation that will allow Philbin to either succeed or fail on his own. My biggest concern is with the urgency to win now will Hickey be as conscious of the Dolphins future as Ireland was. I know a lot of people hate Ireland, and I know it was time for him to go, but even over the past few years while he was in the hot seat he did not put Miami in a position to be in trouble in the near future. He and Aponte might not have gotten along, but they had similar vision on contracts and because of that the team has plenty of money. Let’s hope Hickey has a similar vision.

A Dominik addition would be awesome. I think he is talented FO type.

Maybe because several guys turned down the job offer.

You cannot have a conversation with a fan that think Hickey was one of the top choice. As stated earlier, it might be the best fit in the end, but Hickey was not the guy initially.

Others has posted here that Hickey was a decent guy and one who didn't like the spotlight. Humble even.

There are reports in his interview he knocked it out of the park so he must have impressed at some point to be considered for the job and no one knows in what order the candidates ranked.
