The Barry Sanders Story on NFLN Now

NFL Films did an outstanding show on him. I still have it on my TIVO from over a year ago. It's easy to forget just how special he was.

I was never a Lions fan but I would watch their games for only one reason. To watch Barry Sanders run. The man was amazing.

IMO, he was the best RB of all time.

I've never seen any other RB blowout a defender's knee because the defender tried to make a cut as quickly as the RB to make a tackle. Rod Woodson must think Sanders was the best ever.

Here is a highlight reel:

Watch what he does to the Viking's LB in the first clip. Amazing. The LB is unblocked and he doesn't even touch Sanders. At the 6:33 point in the video, he makes John Lynch look like a chump and at the 9:18 point, Reggie White is unable to lay a glove on Sanders.

I draw a line of distinction between most amazing and best. In my lifetime, I'll go with Sweetness. But, I know there's a big argument to be made for Brown.

i think you have to consider the untimely retirement of barry sanders and what he wouldve accomplished with just a couple of more seasons. he was already worthy of a debate, and he retired in his prime. with much left in the tank

I agree that he had still had greatness left in him, but it isn't what he would have accomplished IMO. His performance was plenty on its own. It's his style. I'll take the consistency, on each play, of Payton, and his ability to bang out the short stuff.
If there's anything left out in the Barry discussion, it's his amazing performance with only one year having a lead blocker.

i agree, but you also have to agree that sanders is right up there with payton. barring that he was going to break paytons record. as for consistency, just look at sanders numbers. his "worst" season was in 93' when he had 1,115 yards...... in which he missed 5 games, so he wouldve had over 1,500 that year. 9 out of 10 seasons over 1,300 yards, (wouldve been 10 for 10 if not the 93' season 7 out of 10 seasons over 1,400 yards, and 5 out of 10 seasons over 1,500 yards. as for consistency on carries, the least he averaged a carry for a season was 4.3 and had a career average of 5.0 yards a carry, thats incredible. as for receptions for a back, he was pretty good as well. he averaged 36 receptions a season along for about 300 receiving yards a season. as for banging out the short stuff, sanders may not have done it as much as payton because he was so graceful and agile that he didnt need to. if sanders wouldve played to the lengths of, say, emmitt smith, he wouldve gone down in history as the michael jordan of his position. and that wouldve come with very little debate if any.

Sanders was phenomenal. And projecting what his numbers would have been can be mind boggling.
But, Payton had NO weaknesses in his game. None.
It can be argued that Barry left much to be desired in short yardage situations, and had a knack of losing yards and leaving his team in a 2nd and long. His ability to make people miss is only rivaled by Gale Sayers, and his penchant for breaking home runs is better than Payton. But, I want the all around greatness if I'm going to declare the "Best".

I watched lsat thrity minutes of it..great stuff. As of me being young, and being in this country for only four years (dont get me wrong..i know RESEARCHED my dolfins..) IBut he really wasw a special player...

payton played on better teams, and his career numbers were not as consistent as sanders. i believe sanders is #1 followed by payton at #2.
