I'd say his chances are pretty good with Messam struggling.
Plus you have to consider that this is Sherman's boy.
Lane knows that offense very well from his days at Texas A&M.
I've always liked Lane. I think he's a bit out of shape but then again, he's a full back. All I want is a big power guy that can move an entire line in short yardage situation. If Lane can get in the gym and work those legs, he can do that easily. However, in the system that Sherman runs, he wants a full back that can catch passes out of the backfield. My personal opinion from a fitness standpoint, he needs to drop to about 250lbs.
The couple of years that we played Texas A&M Lane always concerned me more than anyone with Texas A&M because I knew our offensive line was full of sissy boys who didn't like contact. Luckily, our linebackers stepped up and we beat A&M both time.
Can you believe that we had originally signed Marcel Reece but later let him go and he was signed by the Raiders?
He would've been perfect for our offense, he can block, catch, run, throw, run the option. He does a heck of a lot with the Raiders. Too bad we didn't see his talents here.
Yeah, actually, I can believe it seeing as how Sparano was here then. Sparano couldn't do anything with him because he didn't know how. Parcells & Ireland dumped him even though I don't blame Ireland.
Had Reece showed up with Philbin & Sherman, they would without question hang on to him.
I'm hoping they hold onto Chris Hogan. He reminds me a lot of Eric Decker.
Hogan reminds me of an Austin Collie type, a lanky type of runner but faster than he looks, isn't great after the catch but with great route running gets himself in position to get yards up the field. Neither are going to have amazing 1 handed Calvin Johnson type catches, but they know how to get open.
In this kind of offense that's all we need. We need fast guys who can catch footballs, run precise routes, make swift cuts and get open. Hogan can do that.

funny thing about Lane is before Sherman got there his senior year he was a 280 lb finesse runner. Yeah he was a bowling ball, but he didn't like contact and actively tried to avoid it. When Lane and Sherman first met, Sherman told him he was moving to FB especially if he wanted to play in the NFL.
As for the whole FB thing with Marcel Reece, ect. Sparano's idea of a FB was fairly outdated as he only wanted a lead blocker. Polite was great for that one year with us, but he was also a liability when you called his number (except when you needed a 1 yard run for a 1st down, he was good at that). Even the great blocking FBs in the NFL like Vontae Leach and Lawrence Vickers can be used in the receiving game.
There is only one "bowling ball" and his name is Don Nottingham.
what about tony paige?
